Bedliner Coating for Fiberglass Top

My recently purchased 88 4runner's fiberglass top is in rough shape, and I am considering a spray on or "do it yourself" bedliner coating on it. Anyone have any experience with this?

What's wrong with it that bedliner is going to fix it?

The top has fiberglass fibers showing since the paint on the top has worn away. I got a quote from a local Line-x dealer of $350 to spray it, so I'm looking for alternatives.

line -X would work awesome .. It'll hide any and all spider cracks and fiber ends for EVER ..

You could probably replace it with a good used one for less than that. Might be worth looking into.

Around my area, used ones frequently go for free.

That's how I got my spare, and just turned down another Wednesday cause I have nowhere to store a 2nd spare.


Just checked on it, someone else snapped it up.

Thanks for the replies - I will look into finding a replacement top. That may turn out to be my best option.

Seriously, follow the For Sale/Trade sections of forums, esp local club sites. That's how I got a spare motor, doors, cap, etc, all for free.

Go and buy the roll on bedliner from autozone for like $40 a gallon and just do it yourself. I'm going to bedline my whole truck when i can get it into my dads garage or this spring.

Sixonthefloor has his entire 4runner done in the DIY bedliner. I will hopefully be doing mine that way next year. You can buy the roll on kind but they also make a spray can of it that usually sells for about 8-9 bucks a can.

After I get done patching holes and filling dents on the lower parts of my 87 body, I'm going to mask a nice line about 18 inches from the bottom edge of the body and use that stuff to cover the inperfections and strengthen the dingable, dentable surfaces.

I got the idea from an old car I had that had a rumply surface in the steel on all of the lower surfaces of the door. I don't know if it was the stell or the paint that had the surface but it was as shiny as the paint, just lumpy for about 4 inches up the bottom of the doors and quarters.

I just finished painting my top. Bought marine urethane (deck top brightside) for ~$25 / L I think. More than enough, and I put it on thick with the brush but you can spray it as well. No need to prime the glass. I had a few bits of glass showing through on the top but sanded back to the gelcoat everywhere else. Faired it back with the first coat, then did a light sand on the second coat, stippled it with the brush end on the third coat and it looks very similar to the factory finish. My top was originally black but I did it in white in the hopes it will reflect heat better (Texas and Mexico summers can be brutal); any sailboat shops should have all sorts of colors available. Just throwing out another option.

Get the do it yourself roll on kit. It will work great and look awesome too. After it's dry spray on a clear coat to make it look even better.
