let me also say: I LOVED my 4th Gen. After being in 2 different Tacomas for 6 years, the quality of build and features in the 4th Gen 4Runner made it a much better vehicle for me and my growing family. Had it not been for a plethora of external factors and internal issues related to it having 200K+ miles, I would not have even looked at the 5th Gens - (psst... I didn't like the aggressive looks at first. Don't tell anyone, k?).

I did not want the Limited because of the leather seats (which oddly enough is probably my top complaint about my Trail Premium).

Cupholders in the 2003 (first year of the 4th Gen) had these clips that would "hold" a cup or bottle for the driver and front passenger. 2 Problems: First the clips would break down and barely hold and empty cup when off-road - let alone a bottle of water. Second they are far too close to the vertical dash panel (where there is a "bin") and too close to each other. Large or oversized cups and bottles wouldn't fit next to each other. I ended up making a wooden insert to fix the first problem, but the second was still frustrating.

Cupholders in the 2015 (second year of the 5th Gen version 2) are oversized round holders with a rubber insert that are far from each other. I can fit my 40oz Hydro Flask (vacuum insulated stainless steel water bottle) in the 2015 cupholders with the rubber insert removed, and having two of those in the cupholders in the back seat (same insert size) makes for easy grab of cold water. Is it a perfect system? No, but it is leaps and bounds better than the 2003 was.

I actually never really used those "around the corner" mirrors in my 2003 because I installed a rear-view camera in the spoiler. As a matter of fact, you don't need them in the 2015 with the wide-angle rear-view camera. You can see much more and much clearer on the dash than through those small mirrors. Although the 2015 and the 2003 were roughly the same size and "pretty much the same" frame, the 2015 does better for all around visibility with window placement and sizing. Also, I added the Rav4 heated mirrors with the blind spot convex mirrors in the corners. It was fine without them, but they are more helpful than I thought they would be.

The only two things I liked better about my 2003 were the cloth seats and the ceiling height with the sunroof option, but I am only 5'9". So, it isn't an actual problem as much as a perception. It could also be due to the roof line being so much further forward than the 4th Gen.

Gotcha maybe the revised it for the later 4th gens for the cupholders. But totally hear ya as I frequently have Yeti's and Cambelbacks throughout my cup holders haha.

But the mirrors were while driving not necessarily for reversing, but yes I could see how a back up camera would be nice in city living.

end note...I despise leather. Hot in the summer cold in the winter, thats where Subaru really killed it, my 02 had heated cloth seats!

I tried using those mirrors, but my ADD would kick in before I would focus on them. :lol:

Yeah. My 2011 Impreza had heated cloth seats. My wife's 2014 Forester XT has leather "trimmed" cloth seats, and i am working on adding a heated seat option for her since she won't let me trade that in on a newer one. :ballchain: :shrug:

Having gone from a 2003 SE 4WD (with the 4spd transmission) to a 2015 Trail Premium...

1. Crawl Control / Terrain Control (never used, but I have them)

3. More refined engine control
4. Simpler AC Control
5. Dash Light Color
6. Interior Space and Storage
7. Fuel Economy
8. Better Cupholders (actually my largest complaint about my 4th Gen)
9. Heated Seats
10. Better Brakes
11. Better Visibility
12. More Aggressive Looks

Thank you for your list. I am now on the look out for either a 2015 4R TEP or a SR5P. Unlike most of you, I prefer leather seats. The cloth seats are scratchy and become stained with whatever falls on them... usually coffee and dog dirt.

I complain about them, but they are very stain resistant and easy to maintain. I have learned to like them to a certain extent.

If you are looking for leather, you will need to get either SR5 Premium of Trail Edition Premium (2017 these are now the TRD Off-Road Premium). Now if you really want to take it a step further, the Limited's Real Leather seats are heated and cooled. I wanted a Limited, but needed the features of the Trail Edition for much less money...

I also agree that the wheels on the Limited are way to much bling for a 4R.

Run Away!!! :lookout: Water damage kills things you don't want to pay to repair. I know, I bought an Acura Legend once that had "fresh water flooding".

Switching out rims isn't a deal breaker for me - especially since the brakes are the same size. The look of the front and the chrome just didn't do it for me. The mark-up that they have on the Limited in Central Texas was almost as much as the TRD Pro. So, I had the dealer find me a TEP out of East Texas for below sticker, and I haven't regretted it one bit.

Nice! My husband has a 1997 Land Cruiser and we both LOVE our Toyotas. I have a hard time buying something unless I really need it, so when I do find the perfect 5th Gen 4R I am going to buy it since you guys seem to be very happy with yours.

Well it is a 4runner forum. But there do seem to be a few members in other threads who state the 4runner is weak, but thats for another time.

...and that is why we ended up just buying a new one.
