Replaced my restrictive stock air box last weekend with a 2nd Gen. K&N FIPK. Wow, I couldn't believe the difference. Greater throttle response and you can literally hear the air being sucked in! They advertise 10hp gain guaranteed, and I'm a believer.

Here's the before and after, it was a relatively easy install...us '02 owners need a hole saw for the crankshaft thing.

very nice. I plan on doing this in the next two weeks. Nice to hear of the obvious power gains. Any idea if this will help fuel economy (Im sure it wouild be very minor if at all)
 
I've been thinking the same thing. I just filled up for the first time today, so I'll post my mileage. I think I was getting around 220-230 mi. per tank before the mod. Keep in mind I also have oversized tires with stock gearing.
 
They look nice but my wallet couldn't part with that much money when the deckplate mod net the same HP gains for under $60. ($40 K&N drop-in + $15 for deckplate and sealer)

And it too makes the intake roar at WOT.

You don't think it's protected well enough in the corner? If I did do something like that, whats the best option to keep water out? A filter wrap or snorkel?
 
I don't trust K&N filters anymore, after several studies show that it does not filter that well. I'd rather do the amsoil filter and deckplate mod.

oh yeah, thats a cool truck :)

water and mud has reached the top of my engine before (splashed up, etc), without getting sucked in directly.

with your system it will go right in.... id say nothing is better than stock except a snorkel whether that is internal or external.

What is the best way to get a little more Horse Power...I have read alot of mixed reviews about the K&N Filters and have heard they are good and they are crap...I dont 4x4 at the moment but I will be and dont want to end up with any issues...would like to hear about others setups and what they have encounterd...what they have learned. Thanks.

The most popular among us 3rd gen folks is the deckplate mod. It allows you to get the same effect as the K&N intake, but you can also take it off road without much worries. Plus, it costs a LOT less.

Personally, I will never use another K&N filter. If you are going to do this mod, an Amsoil filter is recommended, as the filter can be cleaned and re-used. The stock OEM will work fine, but it'll get dirtier faster, which will mean more $$.

Currently, I am just using the stock paper filter and stock intake. I really do not care if I can harness a few extra HP, as the supercharger makes my car about as fast as I want, anyway.

Oh, pooper-scoops. I meant True Flow, not Amsoil. Don't know why I got those mixed up...

So to do it up right as I gather from this thread...I want to go with a True Flow filter and a Deck Plate Mod. I would have to have someone do this for me...even with directions I wouldnt be able to do it...dont have the tools for anything either. So would I find a shop or a mechanic...not sure where to look for this. Lee, I know you live in the N.E. maybe you have some suggestions for this neck of the woods.
