Before I begin the Conversion

Alright, good. My worry was that if I was unable to fully part out down to the frame, that I would have to PAY someone to take the donor back, after stripping. Hopefully I can get one with massive rear end damage (none to the Trans/T-case of course) So I can either a. Rip out and sell the motor, b. keep the motor as a spare, or c. Have some fun with it. :P

Sounds like you got it all covered, can't wait to see how it turns out.

I went with a twin stick FJ case so no center diff lock but with my sticks I have never had much issues, if I did need more help I just turn on the rear air locker.

4. Buy a gauge cluster off of eBay make sure it matches your transfer case, i.e. V8 or v6 4x4.. There is a member on here that does LED gauge conversions, he knows how to swap the odometer out of your old cluster into your new one, so don't worry about that part. FWIW, I did run mine for the first several months with the 2wd cluster. It works fine, but I had to have everything working perfect.

You can't swap odometers into a gauge cluster. Your mileage is stored in your cluster. If he has 100k on his truck and he gets a cluster with 20k on it, his truck is going to display 20k, and keep on counting from there.

To the OP; NO you cannot just "roll the odometer forward". There is no device to do this. You COULD try to "borrow" the Toyota computer software (what they use in the dealerships on the shop computers) which might allow you to change the mileage. You can get a USB to OBD-II cable for $20 on Amazon.

Good luck!

Alex,

The mileage can be swapped. There is a small control board in the cluster that stores your odometer. It can be removed and swapped to another cluster with a little know-how. Please remember I have gone through this already, and explored my options.

Pretty sure it was tjhaf2007 that told me how to do it. But I know for sure there is a member on here that does LED cluster swaps.

SAVE YOUR MONEY

there are more important things in life. Ive been through the phase of my life where I dumped huge amounts of money into my vehicles just to make them custom or whatever. You will wish you had all the money later in life.

The best thing you can do is sell your 4Runner and buy a 4WD one. You will dump a ton of money and time into this project and the result will be your vehicle will be worth nothing.

Try to push your urges aside and think about the long term..

just want to help

Cheers

It cost less to do this conversion than a new set of tires and wheels......

I think there are about 1200 members on here that would disagree with you about putting money into there truck being a waste.

And what makes the truck worth nothing? I just sold (3weeks ago) one of my 2003 4x4 converted 4runners for enough money to buy an FJ outright.

How is selling your 2wd for enough to put a good down payment on a 4x4 and then buying said 4x4 and being several thousand more in debt better than spend a couple grand and converting your paid off vehicle to 4x4.

Just because you cannot do the work, or understand the conversion, or see the value in it, does not make it the lost cause you are trying to make it out to be.

Sorry to sound a but cross with you, but your opinion (which you are free to have) goes against everything this forum is about.

Don't spend money on your 4runner, don't wast time with trying new things, and your vehicle will be worthless....what's wrong with you man?

You cannot take the money with you, and you cannot let it control you. If you really avoided doing things because the money you spend may be needed later......well, you will literally never have anything and you will die with stacks of cash, and nothing to show for your life.

I would inevitably spend more on trading. If I buy a salvage.. I have the possibility to MAKE money depending on how far I part it out.

Worthless? Different vehicles have different markets. I guarantee you if I sold after the conversion, id have a buyer in not too long.

Dumping money in... is just incorrect. Net cost is most likely to be around 1800. Its not cheap but its not rediculous.

I'm the one who does gauges.

Could you show the little board? This would open up so many options for me :)

You have to pull the cluster apart to get to it, there must be another member on here that does LED swaps, because who ever he is, he PMed me about it. I will try to find out who it was and you cluster Jedi can figure it out. Lol.

Since I did not end up sending my cluster to him, I cannot explain what has to be done, but I assure you it is possible, and from what he told me, quite easy if you know what you are doing.

tjhaf2007 and darkie3495 I'm pretty sure one of these guys know the secret, cannot remember who, but one of them know how to correct the mileage if you buy a replacement cluster.

I must find the answer! :help:

You are a mod, can you pull my old deleted PMs? We can get to the bottom of this if we can find out who was going to do mine for me along with the LED lights...

I went back as far as I had saved, and It was not far enough to find out who does it, but it's there man, you're going to have to trust me now, and believe me later.

I am a mod lol. This is something you'd take up with admin, I don't have that kind of clearance :moping:

FJ flexin' on them circuits, boy! If I can figure this out, it will save me A LOT of money. And why could I not roll it forward? Isn't that what the stealership does to match a dead odo?

Hahahaha yeah it was fun.

And they just program them. There is no "rolling forward" or "rewinding"

The dealer can reset the the odometer, however they will reset a new odometer to your current verified mileage only.

What I am talking about it swapping you 2wd odometer into a 4x4 cluster. An there is a member that can do it, but I'm not sure who he is, it's been too long and I deleted his PM. I have a spare 2wd cluster, I may be able to pull it apart and see if I can figure it out..

To clarify, someone on here was going to do the LED swap on my 4wd cluster before I installed it. I mentioned the mileage issue and he said swapping them was not too hard to do, and he could do it at the same time if I sent him both clusters he would pull the odometer from one and swap it to the other. But then when I was working at a dealer thy mixed up the mileage on my SR5 and Limited 4runners anyway when I was having service done, so I said screw it, and never had it fixed before I put in the 4x4 cluster.

Wow bud no need to be so jumpy..

Im simply stating that something like this highly decreases the value of a vehicle and the available market to sell such a vehicle regardless of what your personal experience has been, that's just a fact.

I never said not to mod your vehicle, every vehicle I've owned has been modded to an extent. but that goes with saying that it needs to make sense. Converting a 2wd vehicle to 4wd when you can already buy it from the manufacturer with 4wd does not make sense on such a late model vehicle.(at least to me)

All I am doing is trying to offer some solid advice to a young member here. whether he wants to take it is up to him, either way it is definitely a solid learning experience doing a swap like this and can be fun(and miserable) and I respect whatever he does with his vehicle.

It's easy to get caught up reading automotive forums. You hear mostly all the good that comes from modding but almost never the headaches. I can read all day about someone pushing 30lbs of boost through their sleeved Honda blocks, and damn does it sound like fun, but sure as hell doesn't mean its reliable and smart.

Its not solid advise in any way shape or form. You have ZERO idea what you are talking about and are calling your loosely formed opinion a fact. go back and read post 1.... the OP asked for people NOT to make post like yours.

converting a used 2wd to 4x4 makes it worth less than a used 2wd...? really man? show me where you have concluded these "facts". O you cannot, because its your opinion on the subject you know nothing about. You said its just a fact, backed by......well...backed by, you said so...?

so by your "facts" he would be better to sell his paid off 2wd, he will get about $8500 for it (nothing extra for all of his mods) then buy a comparable 4x4 for around $11500 and have to re-do all of his mods. so he will be in debt several thousand dollars, and have to start over on mods rather than spend $2k and have the vehicle he wants. Yea, that's sound advise.......

Please respect Stuck CAPS request and keep your negative opinions to yourself.
