Before I send these LastFit bulbs back are they really illegal for street use?

They’re the custom 50W 5000 lumens bulbs.

I’m reading that led bulbs in halogen housings are illegal and also 5000 lumens is too bright even if you do adjust them downwards.

I have LED's all around, Highs, lows and fogs, and I pass cops all the time. I love the brightness and they are so much better than the stock bulbs.
 
Since laws differ from place to place, I'd go down to my local police dept and ask. Or, look up local laws.
 
Looks like I gotta send em back. 250 fine and 2 points if I get caught. Many people would say I probably wouldn’t get caught but why risk it? The simple solution is I gotta spend more money and buy the 2021 Toyota LED headlights because they’re factory LED and not modified. Lot more money but it’s just better to do things the right way.


SECTION 56-5-4840. Selling or using devices or equipment to change design or performance of lamps or reflectors.

It shall be unlawful for any person to sell, offer for sale or use any device or equipment which tends to change the original design or performance of any head lamps or any other lamps or reflectors required by law to be attached to motor vehicles, trailers or semitrailers unless the equipment or device has been approved by the director of the Department of Public Safety.

HISTORY: 1962 Code Section 46-554; 1960 (51) 1969; 1993 Act No. 181, Section 1448.




Moral of the story: check your state laws before spending $175.

As others have said, laws can vary from state to state. However, an old federal law, from the sealed beam headlight days, says you cannot have lights greater than 50 watts. That is why all the halogen lights you will find are below that number.

But I have run 100 watt halogens in one of my old cars for decades and have never been stopped. As someone else said "how will they tell"?
 
You worry too much about non-issue. Of course if you ask them they wont give you a blessing to go ahead and potentially violate guidelines. It is like asking: can I drive 50mph in 45mph zone? How do you think cop is going to respond to that? Anyways just install, aim your housing properly and be happy that you along many newer car drivers (using OEM multiple bright LEDs especially in high end cars) can see properly at night.

I do have these myself, and nobody's ever flashed me. If you're really worried, then take them out. I haven't had any problems, though, and the stock headlights are atrocious.

If you want to try something else before doing a 2021 headlight swap, try this. I actually wish I tried this before spending all the money on the Lasfit ones. They'll probably burn out faster than the stock headlights, but they should work better. It looks like they are LMAO 55 watt, but it's only a little bit more and would probably be harder to detect if anyone decided to be a mega sticker.

The problem with the higher light output halogen bulbs, such as the Philips Xtreme Vision, is they burn out much faster than lower light output halogen bulbs. I used them for awhile, but got fed up with replacing them every year.

Yeah, that's the tradeoff. There are options on the page, so you can get the 60% version that'll last longer. It won't be as bright, but if it's bright enough for you, then great. It'll be cheaper in the long run, too.
 
Every state is different but for the most part you should be okay (note I didn’t say legal).
If you have massive amounts of glare and you're getting flashed every time you pass a car, you are definitely violating some random vehicle code.
That said, here in California, you can spray paint all your lights black and never get stopped.
If you live in a state that does inspections you might hit a snag, maybe not.

All cars sold in the US are required to meet the Federal DOT standards for lighting. Individual states do not have the authority to change that. But the individual states may vary on enforcement. For decades, the USA DOT standards have fallen far short of what more modern light engineering can do for light output to the road. The European standards have been so much better.

The idea is to get the light where it is needed on the road, without blinding oncoming drivers, thus the European light standards have a very sharp cutoff pattern for their headlights, not seen in US spec cars. First with the advent of halogen light bulbs, then LED, the USA is slowly catching up with other countries, but there is still a disparity.

If you are getting flashed by oncoming cars, it may not be the amount of light, but rather a headlight alignment problem. Since 4Runner owners like to lift or level our vehicles, the headlights will be lifted or angled upward. Thus if you do a lift/level, you should always have your headlights realigned.

I think you are thinking too much into this. The cop would have to:

1) stop you for having "too bright headlights"
2) pop your hood, take out the light, and actually know what he is looking at and know what your 4R came with from the factory
3) Give you a ticket because you bought LED bulbs online because your OEM toyota bulbs suck
4) take the time to show up in court
5) the court would then actually have to give you 2 points on your license rather then probably just settling for $54 and sending you on your way after being in court for 2.5 minutes.

Seems like a non issue when bro trucks and wranglers drive around with their 50" lightbars on all the time. If I were a cop I'd be after those people rather than a 4Runner with their headlights on that looks like every other vehicle with LED headlights at night.

Are you running these in your halogen side firing low beam projectors or your halogen high beam reflectors ?
If low beam, there are better options, if high beams, I wouldn’t look back!
