belt squeak 04 v8

so its been pretty cold and i noticed in the morning that the power steering belt squeaks a little when im turning out of my driveway. anyone else notice this? should i have it checked out or is normal? i have 35k miles on the 4runner.

Sounds like it's time for a new serpentine belt, and maybe a tensioner. Take a look at the belt, feel how tight it is, and look for cracks in the belt ribs.

im surprised that it would have to be replaced with only 35k miles on it. like i said it only happens when it gets really cold (below 20F) and when i turn out of my place. I pretty much drive off right after I turn the engine on... I don't hear it after the initial sound.

Well, it may not have good tension on the belt causing it to slip. If this is the case, the belt and tensioner should be replaced. It is not uncommon for these tyoe of problems to be more noticeable when things are colder.

Just take a look at the belt. Look for glazing on the flat side, and cracking on the ribbed side. Also press down on the belt and see how far down you can push it in. I know the 4.7 Tundras had a TSB to replace the belt, tensioner, and A/c braket for belt squeal......not sure if it applies to the 4runner though. I can find out for you if you'd like.

No, if the belt has low tension, you have to replace the auto tensioner. What does your belt look like? Sure it doesn't have many miles, but it's four years old and rubber.......Does it have any cracks? The tensioner won't be cheap.....
