Best AT Filter Kit? Anyone use Wix?

I see the Wix 58610 Auto Transmission filter listed on the Amsoil website, as well as Amazon. Price is around $17-19:

My son's 4Runner is a '99 with the 6cyl engine, approx. 192K miles and no record from the PO about a filter replacement. I wanted to drop the pan, inspect and replace the filter and refill.

Anyone have any positive or negative comments about this one? It uses a gasket instead of the adhesive (FIPS?).

Or do most of you use Toyota OEM? Anyone know that part number, by chance?

I would use the OEM, but that is just me.

It seems as if someone on here or on YT has used the Wix with the gasket and been fine with it.

If I were in your shoes, I'd drain some ATF while hot into a container first, take a magnet and put it into the fluid, and see if any big flakes attach to it. If nothing is visible, and the ATF is shifting OK, forgo dropping the pan and just refill the tranny with some new ATF such as Castrol Import ATF.

The OEM A/T filter is more like a mesh grate, it doesn't operate the same way that an oil filter would. You are supposed to clean it off during every other fill & drain, then re-use it.

I am pretty sure I still have the original one and my trans is going strong at 208,000 miles.

Stick with the Toyota part, always.

I used one. It is just a screen. Did not use the rubber gasket. Clean the magnets off in the bottom cover. I don't see how there could be more loose flakes unless it was really fubar.

original is silicone goo, napa sells a gasket.

I ran a magnafine in line filter as well as it is a true filter not just a mesh screen

1. You don't need to buy a new filter. It's just a wire mesh, take it out and clean it with a rag, run brake cleaner through it if you want.

2. Yes, you will need to replace the gasket. Toyota just put sealant on the mating surface, there's no gasket so get yourself a plastic scraper and go to town. Then put a solid gasket like the one that was mentioned from NAPA.

3. Can't go wrong with any fluid really. Just make sure it's compatible with Toyotas and you are good.

4. You can find your transmission code on the driver's side doorjam sticker.
