Best bang for buck lift and tire combo?

Hey guys been a lurker for about a year and did a lot of research and i feel the time has come to do first real upgrade to the beast; she is v8 05 limited all stock xreas. I have about $3K to spend on tire and lift combo; so far thinking



3" Lift W/ Bilstein 5100 Height Adj Coilovers FJ/4Runner $950 @ toyotec
265 70 17 BFG AT's on stock wheels $1100


figure $500 for install

how am i looking? the truck has 150K on it any other suspension parts i should swap out while we are at it?

Sounds good but do the install yourself and go for duratracs instead of the bfgs.
 
My 2 cents would be to not spend $1100 on the BFGs, but to instead get Cooper Discoverer AT3s for less than half the price. You can also install it yourself pretty easily with a wrench set and a jack/jackstands. Those two things would save you ~$1000 that you could put into other mods.
 
do you guys recommend FJ Cruiser/4Runner Ultimate 3" lift package for extra $400? In the grand scheme of things $500 or even $1000 is not much and i see lots of people changing their cheaper lifts down the road, i just want it done once. Hmm Icon stage 1 is $1800 which is not even that bad $$$, is it really worth the cash?
 
I went from toytec coilovers, had them for a few months and I really didnt' like how stiff the ride felt, moved over to icon coilovers and couldnt be happier.

the ride was alot softer both on and off road, almost felt like it was stock again!

go for the icons, you wont be disappointed!
 
I got 5100s for the front for $175. Then I got Daystar for the rear for $40. Then I got new Monroe SensaTrac shocks for the rear for $80. Then I bought Cooper AT3s for $415 after rebates and discounts from DTD.

So I'm in for $710...no including the money I spent on Duplicolor wheel spray to turn my stockers anthracite in color. Couldn't be happier. Well, actually I wish I had kept the 5100s on the 2.5 setting...but I can change that when I do my lower ball joints this winter.
 
51s & FJ springs maybe daystar rear for your needs , but do it once & if you think you might go 50/50 go icons my 2 !

I would go with the icons even though I have the bilsteins. Reason why is the place I had them installed said the bilsteins have a tendency to bend if too harsh of off-roading. They recommended the icons for more serious off-road. We, mostly my wife, use ours as more of a daily driver, mall crawler and pop-up puller. Not much off-roading yet.
 
so what would u guys recommend for someone who just wants like the front lifted 1.5" and rears .5"? i wanna get rid of the front lean and looking to only get slightly bigger tires.

i have too many miles to really invest too much money into this but all the shocks are leaking and while im replacing shocks just wanna go ahead and see if i cant get slightly stiffer and lifted.

Spoke with guys at metaltech to do Icon stage 1 install and they say you have to do aftermarket upper control arms also to get it up to spec... seems like most guys dont get those with just a stage 1? confused
 
UCAs are not required. But when you lift the front suspension about 2.5-3", the Caster Angle gets rather low. This can cause the vehicle to have a wandering issue when out on the highway. Some people don't mind, others can't stand it and so get some aftermarket UCAs to fix the issue. If you stay below 2.5", then the caster can usually be brought up enough. You don't have to run UCAs with the Icons. In fact Icon offers two versions of their coilovers. One for use with stock UCAs, and one for aftermarket.

So, which ICONS would I need to order to not need the UCAs?
 
Thanks for the answer YotaDan, so if i dont want to spend the extra $400 for the UCA's am i limited to under 2.5" lift? I only see one version of icon stage 1

Which Duplicolor color looks like Anthracite(dark grey)???
 
You can run full 3". The longer version just takes advantage of the extra travel that the Uni-Ball UCAs offer. If you order a Stage 1 kit, we will send out the standard travel units unless you specify you want the extended travel. You can of course call me with the order as well if you are unsure.

It's actually called Duplicolor Wheel Paint. I got it from O'reilly Auto Parts but I'm sure lots of stores have it. It has a lot of metal flake in it and honestly it looks beautiful on the stock wheels. So far, it seems to be holding up pretty well to mud and car washes.

Daystar spacers $150
Fj Bilsteins $100-150
18x9 wheels $450 - $700
275/70/18 bfg rugged trail ta $200 = 33.25" tire
This will net you 4.5" with the tires :)
