Best bang for my buck...

I know there are many threads on the stereo system, but none that I've found concerning what I am looking for. I did see the thread of Mag installing Kappa's in his SR5 (no JBL) and it making a huge difference. However, I have a LMT with JBL and am wondering what the biggest bang for my buck is going to be as far as the sound system.

I do not want a huge subwoofer in it anymore, and I do not want to replace the factory Nav unit. However, I am up for replacing speakers/amps/subwoofers. Or adding a shallow-mount sub, if possible.

So I guess what I'm wondering is what people have found to be the best cost-effective way to add some thump to your system without breaking the bank, replacing the head unit, or having a massive set of subwoofers in the trunk.

Get a small sub (to save space) and 3-way component speakers.

Try reading some car audio specific sites.

Also, what are you going for? If you want "thump" it sounds like bass or SPL is what you are after, not SQ. Of that is the case you should look into a custom box to replace the factory sub, and another amp (possibly just a sub amp) for that. Then you can keep your HU and factory speakers.

Trying to stay around $500-700 or so for the parts, I can probably do the install myself. Definately looking for "thump" (hip-hop music), so look into replacing factory sub with aftermarket? Probably can't fit a ported box into the factory sub spot, so it would have to be sealed. Never done a sealed box before, only ported. What different things should I be looking for if any?
