Best camera for a new photographer?

I should explain my above comment a bit more. First, let me say that is IS possible to take a fully professional photo with a non-SLR camera. However, if you plan on making it a career, you NEED the ability to shoot in all circumstances. You need a camera that can shoot super wide one second and ultra zoomed the next. The ability to shoot in all sorts of lighting situations.

The below photo was taken where I'm sorry, no point an shoot could shoot with no flash, that fast and that wide.

One thing the other posters haven't mentioned is that if you go full frame be aware that the cost of glass is crazy expensive.

If you go Nikon you will need the Nikon Holy Trinity:

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II - $1800
Nikon 14-24mm AF-S f/2.8G ED - $1400
Nikon 24-70mm AF-S f/2.8G ED - $1400

So you're looking at like $2,000 for the newest full frame Nikon camera plus about $4,500 for the glass!:frisky:

If I were you I would just go DX.

My current setup:

Nikon D90
Nikon 35 1.8
Tamron 17-50 2.8 (Non VC version)
Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC

Here's the thing... If you go full frame, you cannot use the lens made for crop sensors. If you go crop, you can put any lens on it... Keep that in mind.

Also keep in mind for the future, when you buy crop sensor lens, and then upgrade to full frame, there are now useless

I also agree with above, a pro needs a full frame...
 
Good quality point and shoot with an automatic mode. If you want to start off with a DSLR, get a Canon Rebel with a good lens- learn that and upgrade.
 
 
My brother just bought a Canon 7D from Costco for $1899. It came with a 28-135 IS lens, flash, and gear bag. He was showing me some of the pics and I am impressed. I can post up a few samples if you want. I am still sticking with my s95- my camera must fit in my pocket :D
 
I just bought the Panasonic DMC-FZ200. I am far from a pro, but I did a ton of research and chose this one over the Sony 5N and 5R, the Nikon and the Canon.

The Panasonic is a bridge camera, but it has the most/best features of any bridge camera available... 2.8 constant aperture, Leica lens, 450 shots per battery charge, great zoom, EVF and articulating screen, hotshoe, and built in flash, 1080 HD video, 12MP, 12fps, shoots in RAW and is fast as hell! The pics will rival a DSLR (not beat)

It has everything I think I could ever need. Check it out.
