Best Double Din DVD for the $$$

Hey Guys~

I have a 2001 4Runner

Looking to purchase a double din dvd player tomorrow or even a single din that morotrs out.

What is the best bang for the buck ou there?

What are your recommendations.


Looking to spend within $500-700.

I would do a double din. They are much nicer. Kenwood has some nice units.

The Alpine IVA-W505 is amazing, i think you can find it for around $800, if thats too much the IVA-W205 is pretty good and can be had for $600

I spent a few days researching decks and driving around to shops. I settled on the Kenwood DNX-8120. Top selling points for me were
* Navigation data is stored in memory on the unit (no DVD discs). Maps can be updated from garmin.com
* Has 2xUSB input for a regular thumb-drive, external hard-drive
* 5 volt outputs
* Can play MP3s from a DVD disc
* Built-in Parrot bluetooth works very well


The Pioneer AVIC-Z2 or Z3 looks better and has better menus, but lacked USB inputs, and can't play MP3s from a DVD. The Z2 has a built-in harddrive which sounds great, but you can't copy MP3s directly to it, you have to burn them to a regular audio CD then have the unit rip it into its custom internal format. The Z2 also can hook into the speed sensor wire for navigation without satellite.


The Alpine W505 is also worth a look, but I really didn't like the menu and interface. But the screen on it is MUCH higher resolution than most decks.

I realize that this might not be something you are interested in, but since you did the research, how is the iPod support with that Kenwood?

I did run the iPod cable to the glovebox since my wife has an ipod touch. Works fine with both audio and video. The menus are clean. The iPod cable uses one of the two USB inputs.

supposedly the pioneer f90bt is a terrible headunit. many pissed off owners complaining at avic411.com. takes over 90seconds to boot up. up to 15 minutes if your ipod is hooked up. it does however have a very high resolution LCD panel and some other features that pioneer doesnt include on thier more expensive units.

I was referring to the f900bt. Have read that full boot with ipod hooked up is roughly 1 minute...

I've always been partial to Pioneers in the past, but I haven't heard anything really great to say about these new headunits of theirs. This time around I believe I will be going for the Kenwood 8120 since you can find them for around $1000 and it comes with a ton of features packed in it.
