Best Exhaust System?

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about JMC. Exhaust systems do a lot more than make sound. In fact many exhaust systems by high performance manufacturers allow you to choose the sound you prefer while still getting the same performance increase on your truck. Just take a look here and you'll see the variety of volume/sound/resonance capabilities that Flowmasters give.

I went with Borla
After talking to Chaz and listening to exhaust systems on Youtube I went with Borla and I'm VERY happy with my selection. Yes, its pricey, but I felt it is worth it by the looks and sound. I wasn't looking to set off car alarms when I start up. The side exit was important to me. Add the Volant CAI and I am most pleased with the whole package. Even with the stock airbox and a K&N drop in and removed HCF it just sounds so damn sweet. Again not too loud, just better!

One of the things here is that it seems to me that your talking about catback systems. If all you want is sound it ALL come down to preference on what you want your truck to sound and how you want the tips. Power really won't increase unless you get rid of the cats and change the tubing. To be honest the factory muffler flows very well which is why I'm still running it while waiting for my APR exhaust.

I just installed a Gibson Cat Back exhaust on my 04 SR5. It was easy to install, sounds great and cost 300 off of amazon. All in all a great value for the time and money spent.

I'm thinking about a custom 2.5'' catback with a magnaflow muffler. I was quoted $280 for the whole job.Besides clearance, is there a benefit to a side exit exhaust? I basically have the freedom to choose where i want it to exit with a custom job and I'm not sure what to get. Will a side exit prevent exhaust from getting sucked in the rear window? The sulfur smell sucks

I have the same set up as you do, couldn't be more pleased. the 40 series makes the v6 sound like a v8, for sure lol :thumb:
Second for the Gibson exhaust. I have it on my v8 and it rocks. Has some growl under throttle but not too loud on the highway.

Fine to keep stock muffler sound, but Its a known fact your stock exhaust restricts too much creating heat to be held inside the engine. EPA smog laws have driven car makers to restict heat/fumes so bad over the yrs its greatly shortened engine life. Soon we'll need no heaters in cars as your arse will be hot from the exhaust/cats.
Its common sense that when the sounds restricted so bad the heats restricted too, so the best thing for engine life is to allow one to breath.
Remove/gut the cats regardless of muffler used is a better upgrade. Most of us can't do this over state laws yearly smog tests, so your next best thing is install high flowing cats and then your mufflers sound of choice.
As far as true performance/air flow any straight through glass pack flows higher cfm ratings than any turbo/chambered style and yes even better than flowmasters.
Flowmaster in the day heavily advertised they were the best performing "Turbo" muffler but most took that as the "best performing muffler"....Big difference, they do make straight thru race mufflers (pro series). Why? Because they flow better!!
Drone or sound resonating throughout the vehicle is the downside of all the highest flowing mufflers so choose wisely if you hate that inside hum on the hwy.
Now' myself I drove a 425hp 69 Dodge Superbee with 3" exhaust /glass packs daily for over a decade I can handle any drone sounds thrown my way but most like my wife cant. I like a deeper rumble bass sound, never liked the wisper sound of high restricted stock mufflers or high raspy chambered /turbos at all.
Today' I like it deep sounding but just loud enough so I dont have to turn off my engine to order in a drive through. After I pull up close and yell pretty loud though when I order so I manage...lol
Not sure if I'm getting older or lazier but I've changed because before it just didn't matter? :help:

Late post, but I'm sure more people will stumble upon this while researching exhaust.
Put the Borla Pro XS part #40664 19 in muffler on my 99 4Runner. Stock exhaust pipe size, 3.4 liter engine.
Very quiet, just a hint of rumble at idle, a slight resonance when passing through 1900 rpm, but it is almost unnoticeable. Overall very satisfied, really pleasant to drive around in my 4Runner now. $100 (for the stainless) at Summit racing and $75 for a local shop to weld on.
