Best Ideas For Storage - stock compartments and tie downs

I've read a lot about building or buying storage boxes or panels and it got me thinking - what about all the built in storage areas? What's the best way to utilize them?

I'd love to hear everyone's bright ideas. A few thought starters and guidelines:
  • What do you store in each of the various storage areas?
  • Where are unique areas to store things and what fits there? E.g. next to the jack in side panel.
  • Sharing what after market boxes/bags that fit inside of cubbies, etc, or attach to tie downs is encouraged.
  • What inventive way have you found to store something in the trays on top of the wheel well?
  • Are there any good items to store in the doors besides a drink cup?
  • A picture is worth 1000 words.

I've thought about really trying to utilize all the stock locations but I kind of hate having stuff squirreled away all over the rig. I really thought about breaking the tabs on the wheel well storage tray things and storing stuff down there, but never committed to it. Now I have 2 rago storage panels, so I don't have a ton of need for it. Still may do it though.

I use the 2 rear cup holders to store 2, 1 liter water bottles that I swap out every few months. I also have a swiss canteen w/ cup in the flatter section of the rear door cup holders. It slides in like a glove with the water bottles.

The only other one I know of that I sort of thought was cool / didn't think of it, was the space under the rear seats. It's just big enough for a strap or something of similar size. Saw someone post about it. I was thinking i could try to find some square zippered pouches that were velcro backed (stick to the carpet) I could throw back there with emergency / survival stuff in them.

First thing I did was take the owners manual out of the glove box. That thing is huge.

Absolutely - I searched and have read many threads, but didn't find any 5th gen threads solely on the stock area storage optimization. Thought it might be good to open the floor to comments and consolidate all the great ideas out there.

An AR fits under there too, if anyone was wondering... :behindsofa:

CUTTING TOOL (Fixed Blade/Single Tang 90 Degree spine
COMBUSTION TOOL (Lighter, Fero Rod or the like)
COVER (Tarp/Space Blanket)
CONTAINER (Stainless Steel for boiling water)
CORDAGE (550 Paracord)
 
Storage in back of 4Runner

I keep a couple of canvas tool bags in the back. Carry jumper cables, ropes, flashlights, tape measure, hat, gloves etc in them. I have one I carry on work days with all my building inspection tools.
I keep plastic sports water bottles in all the door cup holders. I want plenty of drinking water with me all the time. I always carry a 1 gallon jug of wash water and a bar of soap in a plastic box, a towel, a blanket, hats, sunscreen, paper towels, TP etc for my travels around So Cal mountains and desert.
