Best mod ever for the 3rd gen runner!!

I did the Tundra front brake mod, using the 199mm calipers and the difference is amazing!!

Specs- I purchased new 199mm calipers from NHT, new Brembo rotors, and Toyota original brake pads.

Once these brakes were broken in, I could not believe how much better driving this truck felt!! The original rotor wobble got to the point that I no longer enjoyed driving this truck. Now it feels very solid, the brakes have no fade or warping, and can stop on a dime.

If your going to do one mod on the 3rd gen, this is it.

I don't have time to look up all the part #'s right now, but a quick search will provide many write ups!!

My advice is to go with the 199mm caliper setup, it is easier and there is no cutting/grinding involved...

You can do the job pretty inexpensively by buying calipers, and rotors used!!

I decided to buy new parts because I don't have time to go looking....

Oh, the 2nd best mod for a 3rd gen is the "always on power outlets", all my older cars had this and I have come to expect the ability to charge a cell phone even if the engine isn't running....

rear drum doesnt matter as much cause the front does 70% of the braking, but idk

When i did mine, it was ~160 for the calipers, 75 each rotor and ~50 for pads, all toyota parts. got the calipers from a junkyard. so it was ~350 for with all toyota genuine parts

Anyone know if the mod works with factory wheels that are 15"?

Sorry,the mod only works with the 16" wheels and some shaving of the factory wheels might be required.

Nope, just bolted everything in lickity split.

The hardest part for me was changing the rear drum pads..... been a while since I had to do that because my last personal truck had discs in back, and my work truck is a dually so I just send that to the dealer....

In response to an earlier post- I have the 16" wheels (Limited), you might want to look around for some wheels

I haven't read a thread condemning the mod, and after 3,000 happy miles (yeah I do a lot of driving) I am still happy I spent the time and money on it!

Hey Ron I think the only time any shaving is necessary is when using the newer 231mm caliper. I decided that it wasn't worth the time for me, since the larger/thicker rotors alone pretty much solve the problem.... Don't forget the 4Runner is a few pounds lighter than a Tundra/Sequioa!

My next job on this truck will probably be shocks/springs, I am leaning towards doing the Sonoran Steel kit using the 99 springs.... unfortunately my fun rockclimbing days are over so I am not really looking to lift the truck after all it will spend more time doin' 90 on the highway than playing in the dirt.....

I definitely agree, I did the 231mm's (aftermarket wheels) and it made a HUGE improvement, no question about it. My mom even noticed it, she asked if I could do the same thing to her Sequoia, LOL

If you have the limited/01-02 sr5 wheels (5 leg star) the larger 231mm calipers WILL clear with no modification.

They will fit if they are not powdercoated, I know my 231's didn't fit with the 01 limited wheels and powdercoated calipers. Plus it was a good excuse to get the new wheels I always wanted anyway

Who knows, i just ran out a checked mine and i get the tip of my finger between my calipers and wheels, they are the 5 spoke star rims. maybe yours are different?
