Honestly, those stock 4Runners made my jaw drop. When I approached the first water crossing I was hesitant, and I'm lifted! Totally forgot the stock trucks were up front and already went through it. Insane!! But I'll never underestimate my truck again.

I certainly hear you all and respect your enthusiasm, but when it comes to a running engine with electrical equipment going through fairly deep muddy water, there are certainly no guarantees that because you did it once you will be able to do it again with no ill effects. Concerned you may develop a false sense of security. Luck will eventually run out - just a matter of when and how severe the damage.
Using a 4x4 for traction under mild or severe conditions is one thing (with some technique involved) that the truck is designed for, but mix in deep water and I think you're asking for trouble. No engine bay is designed to have significant amounts of murky water run through it.

i go take mine into Pismo and throw sand everywhere. Its not what it was "made" for but it does a damn good job at whatever i throw at it. I'm impressed to say the least and will continue to use it to sand run, dirt road running and mild puddle jumping.
Some people use it strictly for transportation from A-B and some like to have fun with it and test its limit. Both are great but success can be had with both aspects.

You should come along next time. If you don't want to go through something, you can always go around it. It's fun to see what your truck is capable of. I wouldnt say going through muddy water is bad for it at all. Just as long as you don't get it in the intake or stop moving.
First question I'd have after being told that: 'Did you get stuck?" If the answer is no. Then, "did you keep up with changing the fluids?" If yes, here is my check gimme the keys.
If yes he got stuck but yes he changed the fluids. I'd take it to a mechanic and if I was not allowed to. Kick rocks. GLWS.
If the answer was yes I got stuck and or no I didn't change the fluids I might look around elseware. If nothing else comes along I'd subtract fluid change from the price. Ask if I could take the truck to a mechanic for a once over. Mechanic give me the ok. Here is my check, gimme the keys.

I'll be honest, I got this truck for a great deal. Took it to my dealer and all checked out. I think it's obvious the previous owner of my truck wheeled it. It took hours to get the tons of old mud cleaned from the undercarriage. I knew it was wheeled and that it had 109,500 miles. Now, at 113,000 miles, hit yesterday, it runs like new. It's a Toyota truck and, it can handle it. This is from my experience with buying. I wouldn't let the fact that it was taken off road prevent me from getting a great vehicle unless it was damaged or other visual or audible signs of course.

Thats cool. So basically you were almost in the exact situation as my question when you bought yours - and for the price you took the risk. Kudos to you.
My point is only that eventually your luck will run out when you go out seeking watery mud pits - not talking about other off-roading. Additionally, everytime you do it and subject your engine too it even without immediate issues, components will likely fail sooner than normal even when everything is seemingly running "like new".
From what I recall you're a young college guy with perhaps some "tolerances" that others many not have (e.g. - lesser equity/dependency on the truck, family/care-giver responsibilities, career, commute, etc.) but I don't want to assume that. If the description is accurate, however, enjoy it while you can because priorities change quick with marriage, kids, and careers. Problems with your DD will piss you off to no end.

You're right, I am a young college guy. But I am almost fully dependent on my 4Runner as my daily driver. I commute to college (30 minute drive each way) and I have a job outside of school, so being without a DD is not really an option. Although I don't nearly have as many financial responsibilities as you list, I am responsible for my 4Runner. I pay for modifications and maintenance. Believe me, I hear you on what you're saying. I just don't want you to think that me or anyone else who takes their 4Runner off road for fun is irresponsible or immature.
Like I said, it's all about common sense. If I was worried about major parts (engine, transmission, etc) failing prematurely because of something I drove through, I would not do it. In this case, I do not think I would have to worry about that. Stock 4th gens have a water fording limit (provided by Toyota) of 27 inches. If the water was too deep, we all just went around it. I don't expect anything to fail because of driving off road unless I do something stupid, in which case it would be my fault and I would have to deal with the consequences.

Mike, well put. It is all about having great fun and being smart with it. It is like some people have fun, traveling around the world, going seeing shows and etc or some people think that taking drugs is fun, the people who do drugs are have more consequences later, T4R members are those people who like to travel and etc. We have fun using comment sense. I had an amazing time with all of the guys and the problem i have with my truck was caused by me, the next day when i washed it and not going through the water. Because after wheeling i drove home for an hour and half and it was fine, but when i washed it and start it up next morning it instantly start making noise. Lesson learned next time it is more hand washing and scrubbing, then soaking it.
