Best place to install a brake controller?

Hello all, I just purchased a '06 4runner a month back, and will be towing a RV with it during the summer months. I plan on purchasing a <A HREF="http://www.jordanbrake.com/">Jordan brake controller</A> to do the towing with.

I was wondering if anyone here has done a brake controller install and has the figured out the best place to mount it, and the cable clamp?

I installed a Teknosha Prodigy (excellent unit) --- Made a mounting brack out a piece of aluminum stock and used the left bottom bolt that holds the lower drivers side dash cover on -- just below the removeable door covering the fuses. Not idea as it does block view of the emergency brake pedal. I've heard some mount it on the fuse cover door and then buy a spare so it is removeable when no in use. Suspect door can't be but $20 or so. Why on earth didn't Yota include it as part of the towing package! Or make one that actually is incorporated in maybe the fuse door.

That was kind of my thoughts, a bent piece of metal extending up from lower bolts in the foot well that I could attach it to.

I should head down to Boeing surplus and see if they have something usuable in the aircraft aluminium pile.

Brake Controller

I just mounted mine to the plastic panel that covers the botton of the dash. It's been there a year and hasn't presented any problems. I have a prodigy as well. Due to the location, it's a pain to adjust, but with this brake controller you just "set it and forget it!"

Hey thanks, great pic, and I did found your previous post. I did do a search previously, but maybe I misspelled something...

What are they using to attach to the dash there? Double sided sticky pad?

I riveted the bracket of mine to the fuse box door... It has been on there for over a year now without any problems at all... It never falls off and doesn't get in the way.

It's also very easy to remove if you ever wanted to sell the vehicle; just buy a new fuse box door, unplug the brake controller, and the vehicle is 100% back to original.

I used two narrow screws that came with the unit and they go into the plastic trim. I don't think tape would be strong enough if you needed to activate the brakes in an emergency situation.

I have had no trouble with the Jordan controller.

That is exactly were my Prodigy is installed. They drilled right through the plastic.

So it appears according the the little piece of paper that comes with the Toyota wiring harness and comparing that to the install instructions that I won't need to touch the stop light wire and another wire.

The only weird requirement is the 20-amp auto reset circuit breaker. Did you install one?

The wiring harness/plug that comes with the 4Runner has everything you need to hook up the brake controller without splicing into any harnesses on the vehicle itself.

This should already be fuse protected by the vehicle; I've never had any issues with the brake controller circuit having too small of a fuse or anything.

Well I finally put it in this weekend. Whew it was a bit of a PITA. If I had to do it again, I'd probably go with the prodigy.

The 4Runner's brake on the 4th gen has a short stalk, and the metal is twisted, making it very hard to get a straight on lead into the wired control module that attaches to the brake.

I ended up installing the controller in the same position as leftyrb and using both wire clamps to form a S to get straight onto the left (opposite) side of the brake where's there's enough clearance at the top of the brake stalk.

I have had miy Jordan installed for almost 3 years and it has worked flawlessly, with no adjustments required apart from the voltage to each magnet. I prefer the gradual breaking as opposed to the jerky stops of my gf's Tekonsha.

I attached mine here with the mounting bracket that came with the unit. I used the existing hole that is in the plastic for one of the bolts and then put a screw in to hold the other side.
