I'm currently thinking of getting this Apex roof rack/basket, for my 2016 4Runner:

factory roof rack
Hi from shores of Lake Erie
Finally after some arm twisting I've sold my 98 Limited?? So on the hunt for a replacement 3rd generation 4Runner...I prefer the 99-02 with the "Fat Lip" front bumper
I have a lead on a "99" SR5... black with a 5 speed also actually prefer the SR5 over Limited I'm not keen on the Limited bubble wheelwell aplication.
The "99" I'm looking at does not have a factory roofrack...just a rubber molding.
If I can find a factory roofrack from a donor truck are the thread inserts in roof under that rubber strip to mount the donor rack??
Also had lead on a "2000" SR5 black with automatic...it came with beige leather interior and sunroof but it sold quick. Any input on production#'s on that optioned 4runner? Would love to find that optioned model with the 5 speed.

Baja Roof Rack
Installed a Baja Roof Rack several years ago- so far no issues- very sturdy, little wind noise. Also added an aluminum cargo carrier that mounts in trailer hitch. Rather than place cargo on roof, which adds quite a bit of wind resistance and raises center of gravity, I will use the cargo carrier. If I need more storage space, then I use the Baja Rack. Rola makes a nice waterproof duffle bag which has kept contents dry, even in extended rainstorms.

I installed the Rola Roof Rack a few days ago, and for $120 its an absolute steal. It's about the perfect size- doesn't interfere with the sunroof or the rear hatch. Didn't take too long to install as well.

Where do you get that? Love that look!I would say if you are looking for a full length Basket the Gobi is about the only choice but as mentioned it is really expensive. I personally have the 3rd gen specific BajaRack it sits nice and low since it replaces cross bars and slides into the channels. I really dont notice any additional noise from it. Super high quality materiel and finish. For a little less you can go with the Baja Rack Mule and mount it to the factory crossbars with u-clamps. It all depends on budget and use. I will attach some pictures or you can search on here for Baja rack or racks in general as this subject has been brought up a few times in recent months.

I have always gone with very solid racks that could act as roof line skids for trees in the Sierras. But wholly molly, 1700.00 Vs 120.00 :gun4: The last time I bought a heavy duty rack it was 550.00. Looks like 1K for a similar Garvin rack now. The Roli is sure calling my name, might even splurge for the 18" extension!
I put a Rola on my 99 a couple of years ago. I didn't mount it to the factory rails, I removed those and used some bits of Unistrut and mounted it directly to the channels the rails fit into. Gives it a lower, stealthier, sleeker look. Very solid and secure, I have (somewhat inadvertently) used it as a tree skid a couple of times, heh.
Only issue is that the paint on the Rola is not very durable. I think they ship with nothing protecting the insides at all, from the beginning mine would occasionally puke rusty water out onto the car from the center where the halves connect. And after a couple of years, rust has started to show through the paint on the exterior, it's just sort of coming through the paint, the paint isn't even thick enough to flake off. Looks like a real PITA to clean and repaint too.
Rack sits nice and low:

I'm using the same square stainless steel nuts that fit into the rails that the stock cross bars used to hold them in place. I just took one by Home Depot and got some matching stainless steel bolts. They have to be pretty short, though, otherwise they'll bottom out on the rail before tightening down on the unistrut.

The rack itself was "almost" undamaged. Few of the cross members were bent but I was able to straighten them out. If I ever upgrade, I will try to build my own. A few people have made some really nice ones on here.

Can't beat the price on Rola!! Either Rola or Yak. The Gobi is sweet but damn$$$

I've always liked the wmw and gobi design, but have thought it's too narrow for an aftermarket rack. Craigslist for the win! I picked up a gobi for a 1st gen sequoia and love the extra width of it. 700 bones and included a 41" light bar! Pics show it just tied to the factory rack to get it home. Just have to modify the mounts, make some front mounts and should be golden.
