The Rola is what I'm going with as well (unless I find something as nice looking and cost effective). Post back with how you mount it, if you are doing a low profile mount!
Hi. First time poster. Ive been trying like crazy to find a really basic square crossbar rack that fits on a 2002 oem roof rack rail. Im not sure what its called but the racks that came with this vehicle are the stock racks and they slide into a rail on each side of the roof. I want to remove those 2 cross bars and the 3 little tie down crossbars so i can mount a luggage rack system i have.
Does anyone know of a crossbar rack system that will attach to the 2 track rails? The crossbars have to be square. And preferable the width of the roof which i think is 48 inches.

I know you asked for the best but I went super cheap and got the Reese from Walmart. Is it the best? No. Does it do the job for me? Yes for now. I really wanted the Rola but needed one that day and this one was on clearance for $79. Mounted some lights on it with diy brackets that were supposed to be temporary but worked out. In the future I would like a Baja rack. Gobi is awesome but too pricey for what I need.

I'm still flip flopping on what I want to do for a roof rack. I daily drive my 4Runner a lot and I want a really low profile rack and the less noise the better. The primary use will be to mount front, side, and back lights, I might occasionally haul a tire and wheel, water, odd things, etc.
I initially thought I wanted a Rola Rack ($160-170), but seems like I'd have to work on it some to get it how I want (rust proof).
I saw these DIY unistrut racks and thinking this might work for me, seems cheap and light.

DIY ROOF RACK 3RD GEN 4RUNNER
I decided on repurposing a Humvee storage rack to make a low-profile roof rack for my 4runner.
Customizing and Mounting:
I wanted a 3/4 rack that is low-profile, can mount lights, smaller accessories, and jerry cans when I need and can easily remove all of it (except the rack) for daily driving.
The Humvee rack was found at my local military supply for around $50 and measures 64" x 35.75". It's a bit long for what I need and a bit narrow, sitting just inside the factory roof rails. The width of the rack ended up being okay with how I wanted to mount it and the desired clearance for the side lights.
The rack was shortened to 53" long in order to accommodate a front light bar and rear lights and remain clear of the sunroof and rear spoiler. I had to cut off the bottom angle iron supports and weld in 2 small angle channels to form a channel on the bottom of the rack in order to mount to the truck. In hindsight, I could have just built this from scratch to the exact width and length I wanted and would have been less work (all you will need for the rack is expanded metal, angle iron, and cross supports). I used the appropriate sized metal spacers to mount from the channel to the captive nuts in the factory rails. The rack is about 3/8" off the roof.
It turned out well and very low profile. Lots of mounting options and lights with this route. I used a 32" light bar on the front, Nilight oval style spot lights on the sides and rears, 5-pin rocker switches in the factory knockouts left of the steering wheel. I tied all of the lights on the rack to a common ground, so only 5 wires running down into cab. I came right off the passenger rear of the rack with the wiring into the gap between the door and body, down the channel next to the weather strip and drilled a hole to the left of the passenger rear tail light to run the wires into the cabin.

Mounted with M6x1.00x25mm screws and 3/4" metal spacers to get the rack off the roof a bit.

I just picked up a Rola 59504 from Amazon for $120. Got it today and the install took about 20 minutes. I added some clear DAP to the assembly process as some people have complained about them rusting out. Figure that should keep any water from being able to enter the tubes.
It holds my float tube and fits both my boulder pads just fine. That's about all I can say about it for now. For the price though it suits my needs pretty well. Plus I happen to like the way it looks. lol

I bought a Curt off Amazon (their basket and extension) and I've thought it's been great for the price. I made a "custom" mount for it just using some cheap angle iron. It nearly touches the roof in the center.
There are other folks that have done the whole low profile mount thing with other baskets that you could search and see what they did.
They look really nice for the price. Do you have a picture of what it looks like on your rig and could you also take a picture of how you mounted it thanks!
