Best Tires

Hey all, I have a stock 2001 4Runner SR5 4x4 3.4L with the TRD package. There is no lift and it's a daily driver. I am looking for recommendations for a good all terrain tire that's not too expensive but it's really important that they work well in wet/snow conditions. I live in Northern Minnesota and we have wet/snow conditions more often than not. The current tires I have now suck. I never take my 4Runner off-road. I have a well built Jeep CJ-7 for that.

Just looking for recommendations for a good all terrain tire that has good on road, highway, and wet/snow handling.

Get some hankook dynapro atm. Good in snow, rain, mild aggressive look to them. I’m buying those next. I’ve got the cooper st maxx currently and it’s a bit too aggressive although still a good tire. My second choice would be cooper at3. I’ve put them on my dad’s and uncle’s suburbans and they’re great.


Can I have your jeep btw? I have an 87 Wrangler and my dad has an 83 cj7. Those are our fun toys.

Goodyear DuraTrac - a little noisy and many be to expensive for you but they work. They work really good. They have the DOT winter rating. I have used them in snow, ice, rock, gravel, pavement, mud and dirt without any problem. Haven't used in deep sand though. When I wear these out, I will buy another set.

This past summer I welded in new rockers and patched some of the tub on my dads jeep. Then repainted the whole thing and redid the front wire harness for the lights so believe me I know how much work you put into that.

Tires for Daily Driver w/some mild to medium off-roading...

I had duratracs (C rated)for 24K miles, noise begins at 35mph up to whatever, rather annoying, then they really aren't that great off road, got flat twice on rocks where Dynapros (C rated) and Michelins have not. On road Discount Tire could not balance them above 67mph, super annoying vibrations!

I've had dynapro atms, very good offroad and on road tire, got 70K miles out of them with zero offroad failures (no flats).

Now I've got Michelin AT2s (D-rated), they look mostly on road but do have some very nice off road manners. To me they perform as well if not better than the duratracs offroad, I've mudded several times this past fall and they pull thru even in deep water.

On road, they are super quite, smooth (DT balanced them on same OEM wheels) all the way up towhatever speed. Not too expensive, but they are a 'premium' priced tire, though I believe worth it so far. I could opt for the dynapros again too, they are a great tire, just wanted to try something different yet you should consider those tires if on a budget-I would. LOL - I always laugh when people post stuff like that. Unless you drive in the exact same spot at the exact same speed with the exact same tire pressure at the exact same air temperature, etc. you observation is meaningless.

I drive on the rocky basalt covered roads in Eastern Washington know to eat tires alive and have yet to have a flat. I am running "E" rated tires though. Yes, they are a little noisy but if you truly use them in mud and snow, the will way out perform your silent smooth treat tires.

I had Michelin AT2s ("E" rate) on my F-350 and they were great highway tires. Quiet, smooth ride, pretty good on ice and compact snow and gravel roads (don't throw rocks like DuraTracs) but sucked in mud and snow. Never had a flat with them either.

So, to each their own. For winter conditions off paved road, I will take the DureTracs over the Michelin AT2s any day. On paved roads, it is a toss-up, IMOP. But with that said, I am considering the Michelin AT2s for my RAM 3500 when it needs new tires. But, I don't use it off road, that is what my Runner is for!

Well that's kinda Why i mentioned it yet could have given more details. For what I mentioned I do drive the exact same location on my deer lease-same path(too narrow to deviate), same temps (25 to 115 temps, I go every weekend), same nasty large rocks, sand, mud, doesn't change much. But that's besides the point, the "duros" got a flat (repaired by DT so on the bottom) while the other two, one which drove the same road for nearly 70K miles did not-probably a fluke but it happened once. I didn't say one tire was BETTER over the other yet do believe the Michelin AT2s perform in mud just as well as the Duros and better than the ATMs, just pointed out my experiences, but overall I'd question adding the noise of the Duros when it doesn't help anything but looks (they sure do look better than the others) and the PO already had another off-road rig anyway so go for comfort with some off-road ability, IMO. :cowboy:

First, thank you to all that responded with recommendations and personal experiences. Much appreciated!

Second, I fully understand if I ask 100 people for their personal opinions on a subject I will usually receive 100 different responses.

Lastly, I know all terrain tires are not better than a "snow/winter" tire specifically designed for snow/ice. Within the "all terrain" tire category, tires perform very differently in all conditions. I was just looking for a good all around all terrain tire that does "better" than others in snow/ice.

I've been quite happy with the performance of my BFG KO2's. However, I will be stepping down the load rating to C as E is a bit bouncy and rough for me. BFG doesn't offer the size I want in C rating so I will have to switch unfortunately. Most likely going with DuraTracs.

I have to recommend my Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ 285/75/16 tires. I know that they are technically mud tires, but they ride and handle more like all terrain tires in my opinion. The exact mileage on these tires is 42,974 as of today - they have lasted a long time and still have some decent tread left. I have 5 that I rotate every 5,000 miles making sure that a different one is off the vehicle after every rotation and balance.

I know that these are more on the expensive side, but they will last a long time. After these are worn down I will buy a new set of 5. The new version of these are called Baja MTZ P3’s, and they are designed to out perform the tires that I have now.

Back when I had my H3 I ran the Falken Wildpeaks A/T. I loved them. decent price and very quiet. I now have the A/T3 on my 4Runner. I am yet to use these offroad with the 4Runner but the H3 I took did plenty of trails and never had issues with the tire just driver error lol.

Second, how is the E rating? My KO2's irritate me because the ride is so rough with the E rating.

Eh, I had Firestone Destination ATs on my last 4Runner, drove around some crazy backroads in 5-6” of snow, they did fine for that.

Im running the nitto all terrains, they are really quiet for the everyday drive. Seem to be decent in some light mud, good in the sand. Now i cant say anything about snow. We dont get enough around here to speak of.

What do you use for Snow in your area? I live in central NY and often get a lot of Snow. I'll probably end up with two sets either way for more options! Thanks.

I just re-read your OP and frankly I would skip the DuraTracs, they are way more tire than you need for a pavement pounded. Personally, I would even skip the AT tires and get some good All season tires. They will out perform all AT tires on wet/snow paved roads and give you a better handling and ride on the highway. I actually ran some P rated tires off road back in the 80's without any issues and I didn't take it easy on them.
