Best value skid plates

I recently acquired my own 4Runner that has most likely been a pavement queen its whole life. Within the first week I had it, I decided it needed to be taken off road. Then I realized that the skid plates are nothing special (and that some are plastic! :rant: ) After breaking my plastic plate on my second off road outing and denting up the front plate a bit, I'm now looking into new skid plates. Being a "starving college student" I'd like to find something that's pretty easy on the wallet.

What are some good value skid plates out there that would be a good upgrade?

sense your in the bay area, id look into BAMF -bay area metal fabrication, im pretty sure they make skids. and sense you are local you could probably drive to them and not have to pay shipping -hell they might even install it for you

That's funny, some people do have a sixth sense like "ESPN"
Not only was he able to sense that he was in the Bay Area but also that he was a local and not some transplant.............Amazing!

maybe i know him personally...?

but no, under his name and avitar it says fremont ca... thats the bay area, i used to live in the north bay a few years ago(almost 10 now) anyhow i know the second part says pamona ca, which is souther cal down east of LA...

Bud Built is offering skids in Aluminum. Has any one tried one yet? They offer it in Stainless too but aluminum is intriguing.


How does it weigh?
Can you jack the truck up with it?
 
Well I'm in Pomona now and wont have the car back to the bay until December. The Savage ones look nice to me. I'd probably just want to give em a coat of spray paint and call it good.

Another alternative, what about a home built plate system? I'd imagine that would be cheaper. I'd have to brush up on my welding, but thats ok. Anyone have home builds?

If you live in Pomona Roy is located in Yucaipa. You could skip the shipping and check out his shop or meet him half way for lunch in San Bernardino or something. Give Roy a call. He is a great guy.

i think im gonna get the aluminum ones for my next runner, the wife doesn't want all the "weight" because it "hurts gas mileage"... but she wants me to get another runner lol im all for it, 99+ and 5spd

i see no issues with an alum skid, should be fine if thickness is right for the span, shattering a alum plate is much tougher then people seem to think
 
its never gonna see serious off roading like the rescue runner does, it will just be for daily driving and road trips... i want the skids mainly so i keep every thing clean from road spray and so i dont sink down so much in the sand and snow, and keep my cat from getting stolen
