Best value skid plates

A few years ago I saw a thread somewhere that some guys were making their own skids out of some type of heavy duty plastic polymer type sheeting. It wasn't plastic, but it was similar. Can't remember what it was called. It actually seemed to hold up decent for light off roading. If anyone else has any idea what I might be talking about please chime in. I'll try to find the thread.

HDPE is what the material I was talking about is called. It would require more work for fitting the sheet to your underbelly but might be a cheaper/lighter alternative.
