Best winter tires for a 4runner??

I've had Goodyear Fortera TripleTreds on my Limited for about a year now, and have been through all kinds of weather with them. I replaced Michelin Cross Terrains, which were OEM on the truck.
I'm about 70 percent OK with these tires, but they aren't as good as I thought they'd be. All the Goodyear spec info, like snow traction, etc., is just marketing hype. The tires are OK, but aren't as good as Goodyear said they'd be. In fact, they aren't as good as the Cross Terrains I did have on the truck.
I wouldn't buy these again. But, the strange thing is that I have the GY Assurance TripleTreds on 2 cars (Hondas) and they are really great tires. They're the reason why I got them for my truck. But the truck tire is a lot different than the car tire, evidently.
Anyway, I have to say that the 4Runner itself is TERRIFIC in snow. We had our first real snow in the NE yesterday, and I had to drive on lots of pretty steep hills. The 4Runner was absolutely flawless on them, and they were slick roads, with people off in ditches and sideways in the lanes. Going up hills was a breeze. Coming down, not so much, because the traction of these tires isn't all that great. But, just take it slow, and it's OK. But I was more than just happy with my truck. What a vehicle!

The Revos have been just great in this ice/snow we've had lately. I've been 'playing' a little on the ice and on the old tires if I hit the brakes, the ABS would go crazy, and the truck took awhile to get to a stop. Now with the Revos I hit the brakes on the ice, and the ABS doesn't seem to be making as much noise, and the truck comes to a halt in no time.
Same thing with acceleration on the ice, the traction control would make all sorts of noises with the old tires, but now I sure dont' see that light as often.

I am running the Toyo Observe Open Country GS02 Plus in P285/70R17 and love them. I have four sets of wheels and tires for the runner. I run the stock Dunlops in the summer for traveling and towing. Last winter I ran my Toyo Open Country MT's and had the occasional dig in. The new GSO2's give much better traction when I have to get off the side of the road to get around people that are stuck in the snow. The thing I like the most about them is the price of $125 per tire. My MT's were $280 each.

I have Wrangler Silent Armors on my Runnah. Excellent tires that seem to have improved their grip with age. They are a little over a year old, have 21,000 miles on them, and handle even better than I thought they did last year in the ice, snow, and crap we have gotten in the past 2 weeks here in New England. I run them at 35 psi and they handle exceptionally well.
We are considering a Tacoma purchase within the next year or so and will likely heave them or Nokian's put on it shortly after driving off the lot.

I can't say the Pirelli ATR Scorpions are "better" but I am very happy with their performance in dry wet and snow conditions. In dry they are like cat's claws and provide superior road feel and in wet they excel. In snow they perform as well as other tires up here without studs and when I plowed the Beast into a snow bank they got me out using 4lo. Can't complain. Pricey but worth it.

Here is a recommendation from a neighbor in Portland. After reading all the tire threads for over a year I installed Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor's in the stock size.
Tire Rack and Discount Tire did not have them in stock and no idea when they would get out of back order so I bought the tires at Sullivan Tires on St. John Street. After talking to the Manager, got the price down from $230 to $175 each, out the door.
I had them mounted, balanced and installed by my trusted shop for $20/per wheel.
