Better Air Flow

Hey guys,

I was wondering if there was a way or mod to achieve a great volume of air flow rather than purchasing a cold air intake etc. I know a lot of the Audi's and other models cut the bottom of the OEM airbox out and install a mesh screen. From what I have been told, this is actually supposed to achieve better air flow than an aftermarket intake. Let me know if I am way off. Thanks.

I would look at a snorkel if your trying to achieve better airflow; this is just what I have been told by a couple guys on here.

Before the flood of reponses, I will tell you that there are in fact many ways to accomplish this. BUT....most will also add a great deal of noise to the induction sound of your ride. Many people do NOT like the additional noise.

One small way to increase the flow is to remove the carbon filter that sits atop the air-filter. You will see it in the top portion of the snorkle and is put there for evaporative-control issues. I removed mine (do a search for the DIY) and did see about a 1+ mpg difference. Some additional induction noise came from that as well.

You will get responses about modding the box and snorkle assembly, most of which are great mods and very interesting reading. Carry on !!

Search "deck plate" and "hydrocarbon filter" to learn about a couple of cheap, easy ways you can increase air flow without having to buy an expensive CAI intake.

Doing the second filter removal is a slight improvement but there really is no difference in terms of power. the Deckplate mod on the 3rds gens do make a good deal of power. on the 4th gens with the V-6 the only real way to make more flow is a CAI and tuning. however since people don't want to spend the money they just remove the second filter and put a dry filter from AFE in there.

Thanks for the responses guys, removing the second filter does sounds appealing, I'm not too worried about the noise because my truck is pretty lous as is. Flow super 40s and a cut resonator. Also, the +1 MPG would be very nice

Well with that flowmaster you should see a benefit and it may sound a tiny bit louder.

Ya super easy. I just pried it off with a flathead. I snapped the clips a little bit but ehhh what can you do. Not going to use it at anyway. I drove about 10 miles to my buddy's resturant, hit red lights and all. Averaged 21.4 MPG! I usually get around 19-20 on the drive. Good stuff good stuff.

Glad to hear it was worth all the effort. lol you might be able to hit 22-24 MPG avg with that over time.

Also, I'd like to add, when you rev your engine at a stop you can hear the air sucking noise. I really like it, some may not. Sounds really good to me. Thanks for your input! Well worth the 3 minutes of my time! lol

Hydrocarbon Filter Removal

I love this thread, anything to increase MPG.

Was there any retuning? Mustang guys say to retune and our fun cousins (FJ) talk ask about the dashboard lighting up like a christmas tree. Also a FJ guy talks about no gains on the dyno with or without the hydrocarbon filter.

Well with this no there is no need for tuning or retuning. I had a k&n filter and removed the hcf and no lights came on. Even with my new cai and maf calibator I have no lights. You will see no gains of power as you are still using the factory intake with I assume stock tuning. However as there is less resistence you will get a small increase in mpg.

I don't expect one will ever run into a CEL. I practically tore up the intake system of my own Lexus RX300 (see page 6 of my car domain page below) and eventually plan to do some custom intake modifications on our 4Runner. I'd ideally like to do a ram air scoop systems and simplify the piping. I do like some of what I've seen in the aftermarket or the 4Runner and am not fully convinced it's the best design.

Although the power gains are minor, these engines tend to spool up a bit faster. Between that and the added sound, it FEELS a lot faster. LOL!

And those of you that spout fuel mileage differences after driving 20 miles; cut us a break. Let us know how much your average changes after 20 TANK FULLS.
