Better buying used 4runner with supercharger or without?

Alright,

So I checked out a nice 2000 5speed 4x4 supercharged 4runner today. Rig had ~172k on it and owner wants $6000 (black highlander). I think it was supercharged back when it was first purchased. No fuel mods. Had TRD exaust also.

It was a fun test drive! My concern is there were no fuel mods on the runner to support the superchager. 172k miles of a streesed out 4runner engine seems like a bad deal. It seems toyota advertised it as not needing any when it really does.

Superchager pulled nice but comparded to my non supercharged 98 it seemed a little sluggish.

Anyway better to find a non superchager 4runner and then add a supercharger to it or just buy the on that already has one since the begining of its life?

Uhh... you need to get off you computer and call that guy back and buy his 4Runner. Like right now. 5 speeds are rare on their own. A sub-200k 5 speed is even more rare. A supercharged 5 speed? That's like finding a live dinosaur. Trust me, I looked for a long time and it never showed up. I was searching several states too (not AZ though... to far). And it's only $6k? I paid $7k for a supercharged auto with 20k more miles, that's at CA prices though.

A used supercharger is $2,000, $2,800+ if new. MUCH cheaper to buy it on the rig then to install your own. Also, don't fret over fuel mods. It made it 172k miles with no fuel mods, it's doing just fine. These engines are almost indestructable, as you already know. Fuel mods are for pushing more power or going with smaller pulleys. How long it's been on is a non-factor here since you can replace the bearings and it'll run like new again.

As far as sluggish goes, a simple tune up and rebuild of the supercharger will get it back up to speed. The one I bought was also a slug for being supercharged now it's where it should be and pulls like it really does have 240 HP.

If you don't buy I'm flying to AZ and buying it and selling it for $9k for a good profit lol.

If it helps your decision I've contemplated buying an already supercharged 4Runner and swapping the supercharger over to mine and then selling the previously supercharged truck off for a little less because I think that would be a good bit cheaper than buying a supercharger by itself.

It took me 3 months to find mine 5speed 1st gen supercharger with under 170k rust free from Colorado and I paid over 7g get on the phone and buy it

If you want, pm the number and I'll gladly buy it. Hell of a deal if you ask me, that is exactly what I searched 2yrs for and gave up. Minus the S/C.

If it runs and drives, I'd buy it, worst case, take it home rebuild the supercharger sell it, swap the truck back to n/a, sell it, make profit. But more than likely it's just fine. I got lucky and bought a 98 with 200k, dealer installed s/c at 86k, all service paperwork from day 1, it was listed as a fleet vehicle( probably a dealer rental the first part of its life) and it was a steal at 3400. The boy had it for 2 years and had run it on 87, didn't drive it much cause it would "knock", I bought it and filled it up on 93 and drove it home . Just the supercharger was worth what I payed for. Yours sound like a gem as well, buy It!

I saw that 5spd SC here in AZ on craigs, it's a nice truck, IIRC he had it posted much higher, and my wife said no due to 'manual'....

bottom line, if you want manual, that's a SUPER nice truck.
