making the hood scoop functional isnt really worth it for a N/A engine. and cold air intakes arent worth the money when you get the same gains from the deck plate mod. (link posted below)
you really aren't going to get any better gas milage than an average of around 20mpg.

For the best mpg.....
Disable DRL's
Run road tires at high pressures
Keep up with regular maintenance
Remove the roof racks
Dont carry heavy stuff that you arent using
Keep O/D on and ETC off
Avoid using AC
Drive gently, dont accelerate hard
Keep to the speed limit
Do the deckplate mod
(Import a 3.0lt diesel motor, they get about 28mpg)
The deckplate mod cost me $8, took 45 mins to do and gave me 1.5-2 mpg more, and a small increase in horsepower.

At any rate, the MAX mpg you will ever see is ~23mpg. Some have gotten better, because the trip was either all downhill or they were drafting a semi. 
I have a 100 mile commute everyday. So I bought a little Civic that gets 40mpg. If you do the math, I was spending ~$400/month on gas with just the 4Runner. I'll be spending half that on the Civic AND keep the miles down on the 4Runner. The Civic will pay for itself within a year.

if you ask this question then a 4runner wasnt for you. its a truck not a 4 banger car.

After installing the Magnaflow I am consistently getting 21 and 22mpg on every tank. The only thing different is the exhaust. Also, depends on where you live too. Elevation has an effect because I live near sea level and my buddy lives in Denver and has even seen 25mpg out of a 98 SR5 4wd on a road trip to nebraska in the summer.p nut said:

i have a '01 SR5 4runner 3.4L V6
the last couple of tanks ive been averaging about 200 miles, and its an 18.5 gal tank. its SERIOUSLY suffering. i got a little better than the last tank because one of my tires was down to 10 psi, i inflated them to 34 and getting some better. i also put in a K&N filter. what if i do RXP gas additive, possible some engine cleaner next couple of oil changes? I am supposed to do the Deck Mod soon. Any help would out GREATLY!!!

One thing I can think of is replacing the belt driven cooling fan with an electric one. I'm sure getting rid of the parasitic loss the fan casues will increase mpgs. I plan on doing that when I get my 4Runner.
