BEWARE: Geico Claims

I'm shocked.. Insurance companies are actually trying to make money? Those greedy bastards. They should be attempting to lose as much money as possible.

News flash... all companies try to make money. Where's all the anger directed towards auto makers, farmers, movie studios, restaurants, etc? I guarantee they make much more money off of you in any given year than your insurance company.

Take off your tin foil hat. Not everyone is out to get you.

Of course they're trying to make money. The difference is, we need farmers and doctors. We don't need leeches.

News flash, insurance should not be for profit. Were required by law to have it in my state.

Why would anyone on a vehicle forum pander for farmers? :offtopic:

You'll see my point after you are hit and injured by an uninsured driver. You'll be surrounded by farmers and doctors who won't be able to help you because you can't pay them.

By the way, insurance isn't mandatory. If you set aside the state minimum liability limits into a special escrow account you can frolic freely through the fields without the evil imposed by an insurance company.

Have had Geico for 8 years, I'm sure they won't miss you if you're complaining of them not picking up a 535 dollar tab when your deductible is 500 comprehensive

I hit a Deer and Geico was awesome. $8000 in damage (2013 Tundra), and they replaced everything with OEM parts (had to argue over a few parts, but they conceded). They saved me a ton when I switched from State Farm.

Of course they are all runnning for profit businesses, so you have to expect a bit of nickel and diming, especially when they have low monthly premiums...

I have USAA insurance. They are beyond awesome... BUT, it can be pretty tough to become a member... You have to join the military.. :)

High rates?? How about insurance fraud being a major reason. I've been to many car wrecks with "injured" people up and walking around at the scene, having told me there was nothing wrong when I asked. Then, what do you know... when the police and ambulance (when we --FD-- are on scene first, which we usually are...) show up, all of a sudden the patients have neck and back pain. I am always more than happy to provide PD and paramedics with the full story. Frickin' people think they won the lottery or something...

For the dude that went to the hospital and was "forced" to use his car insurance... your policy has bodily injury coverage which is for use when such injury is caused by a MVC. I'm not even sure if your health insurance would cover you if an MVC is the cause... BUT, I don't know. I guess anything is possible depending on how the policies are written.

Did I mention USAA is awesome??? Anyone who's a veteran, active duty, or an immediate family member of such and they aren't a USAA member.. they need to call pronto. My family had State Farm when I was growing up. After I enlisted I was thinking of going with USAA, out family agent said do it, said that She could touch USAA's rates even with all our discounts. Granted, that was a while ago, but my point is it;s certainly worth a look if you are eligible.

Or maybe I'll be able to pay them because I haven't been wasting my money buying yachts and vacation houses for insurance execs.

Good for you for being a dedicated customer. I have been with them a while also. Let me know how it goes when you need to make a claim. Everyone here can have an opinion how they feel.

I liked geico also when my premium was lower. Close to 130 a month if you consider that low premium. Im sure many of you pay less than that in other states besides CA. You cant really judge an insurance company until you need to use their service claim.

Asm mentioned I will shell out of pocket. Take my warning or not. Do some research yourself on how people hate geico when they filed a claim.

I have geico.
Last year I totaled my 3rd gen. Super nice 4Runner. Had several aftermarket parts.
They offered me $5900 after my $500 deductible. I told them I couldn't buy one worth having for that. They allowed me to find a few ads for comparable ones to show the manager. I settled for $6400 after deductible. I kept my stereo and aftermarket parts.
I paid $6500 for it 6 months earlier, so I felt I had came out good.
I put cash with that and bought my 4th gen.

FWIW, when I have to carry insurance, I get it from Allstate. I've had to make three claims on various policies over the past couple of years, and they've treated me fair. I generally rank insurance companies somewhere between child rapists and Hitler, but they've been good to me. They definitely didn't give me any guff about not being able to source new parts when I wrecked my truck. If you're going to jump insurance companies, give them a shot.

Just dealt with Allstate since some dude hit my car and it reminded me of this post. I have to say, they were quite fair and the adjuster wasn't a d!ck.

This reminds me that some of you may want to look into "stated value" policies. Basically you tell the insurer what your truck is worth and they agree. I know a guy who rolled his Toyota pickup in Moab (technically a county road) and had it covered to the tune of 22k.

Just something to consider.

It really come down to the adjuster. I had an accident while moving from AZ to VA that totaled my truck and my then wife's car that I was towing. The accident was in OK. The adjuster there sucked. The guy I worked with in VA was awesome. This was with Geico. The guy in OK was taking so long with things the guy in VA actually told him to get his ass in gear or he would be having a talk with his higher ups. All I had to do was give him any bills that came in and he took care of everything. Even valued my truck a little higher to help a new family out.

I recently dealt with a GEICO claim, and they were very fair.
I sunk my '04 4Runner in the Potomac River while launching my boat (look for my posts if you want to read the thread on it).

The 4R was totaled. The adjuster explained some base lines to me. For example, before they valued my car, I could remove items of value, as long as I put something back. For example, I had a $300 Odyssey battery. When I asked about credit for it, he said he couldn't do that, but I could swap it out for another battery. 12 bucks later, I bought one of the dead "core" batteries from my local station and did a swap.

I explained and document the $3K+ in maintenance and service recently done, and based on that he upgraded the condition in some areas.

Overall, in the end, when I told him I had hoped for a slightly higher payout, he told me I could look for a few local vehicles for sale and he would be happy to run the numbers off of those, but it had to be the same year. I did some checking, and determined that the quote was very fair. So I took the ca$h, added $8K to it, and bought my upgraded replacement which was......

a 4th gen T4R,, 2008 V8 Limited with factory Nav.

Geico has been good to me and very fair. I had another incident a few years ago where someone insured by a different company hit my wife's car causing almost $5K in damage. The OTHER company wanted to total the car, but I wanted it fixed (it was a 20 yr old Benz in awesome condition... before it was hit). After a long fight with the OTHER company, I went to GEICO (my company) and asked for help. GEICO fixed the car, and dealt with recovering the money from the other company.

Both of these incidents were in Virginia, and my experience was very positive both times --- for whatever that's worth. :-)
