BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A

How do you guys like the BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's? I need something mostly good on highway, but stand up to the snow here in Colorado. Also something I can play around minor offroading with. I hear these aren't too good in mud, but great in everything else.


Or maybe the Rugged Trail T/A?

Or am I way off and should be looking at something else? I want 32".

I like them, but they do increase mpg quite substantially.
My advice to go with no more then one size up.

You mean they decrease mpg? how substantially? Addiontally, with an increase in size, would I need to get some of the timing chains/belts altered (I'm thinking speed/miles calculations)?

I've had a few sets on various vehicles. They kick ass, look aggressive and barely add any road noise. I'd buy them and not look back...

Sorry, yes.
I did not touch anything inside the engine bay (dont care much about calculations).

I am sure you already know that the tires will rub, even with one size up it still rubs under full steering lock.

I'm planning on doing a 2/1 lift so that shouldnt be an issue.

That size should not rub at least my Revos never do , BUT the BFG does have a more squared off shoulder so its possible.

Maybe North or Lou could chime in.

With the lift you will have no problem........

I run nothing but BFG AT's and will never run anything else. They are exceptionally strong and aggressive. They provide excellent snow and on road traction as well as excellent traction in moderation off road situations.

They will be a slight bit louder than the stock 4Runner tires, but it is not anything that will be exceptionally annoying.

If you are looking for more of a street tire, stay away from the Rugged Trail and look into the Long Trail if you want to stay with BFG tires.

My Nittos have so much better control in anything wet than the previous sets of BFGs I've driven on and the only way a set of BFGs would make it on my Runner would be if it's for weekend trail runs only.
The BFGs do have a slight edge in durability confidence off-road over my Nittos but on-road my TGs outperform the BFGs on pavement wet or dry. You can simply see the better wet performance by the better continuous water channels in the tread and factory siped makes them have solid turn in grip on ice. Rearend slide control is also better at higher speeds than the KOs too.

Don't get me wrong,BFGs are still a solid tire (off road is where they shine) but if you spend most of your time on pavement but still want a good tire off road (3 years on mine and never an issue on the trails) and is very good for an A/T tire for daily duties and cost about $200 less than a set of BFGs the Nittos are hard to beat for the bang for the buck.

Give the TGs are try if you want to stay on a budget and still get a very good tire for the $$$.

But if you gotta have the look the BFGs do have the looks down and are recognizeable from a mile away and that's worth the price to some people.

You might want to check into the Nitto TG , I've never had them but never heard anything at all bad. Kinda of a good happy medium.

Any decent tire will do you fine , it all really depends on your uses , Revos are a nice tire , I have them now and although I dont really care for the snow traction , they are excellent in rain and easy off road conditions . They ride very nice because they are "P" rated tire , thats one thing I really like about them. I think they wear fast though, I've got 33k on mine and am already past my comfort zone of off road snow wheeling but still doing fine in the rain and feel confident.

I personally hope to get new tires by the end of the year. Not sure what I'll get yet though. I've run a lot of set's of BFG AT and always liked them. Maybe I'll try to find a good set of Donlop AT20's.....lol

No I still have the stock Dunflops on the 4Runner..... I've run nothing but BFG's on my truck, and I will never run anything else.....

I hope to have new tires on the 4Runner by winter and I was hoping to go with 265/70/17.........but have not really looked into it.......will that size rub....... It does not seem much bigger, just a slight bit taller......

You are assuming a bit too much in your description about rain channels in tread, etc.. If you pay attention to a lot of tires these days, then you will see that many highway tires that are rated highly in rain traction do NOT have the (in)famous "aqua tread". For example, the Michelin Crossterrains do not have the classic "rain channels." And the Cross Terrains outperform many of the aquatred Goodyears!

And BFG AT KO has tons of siping, probably even more than Nittos...and the siping are at MANY different angles...this is one of the reasons why it has the snowflake symbol because BFG AT KO has tons of small biting surfaces (from the siping) to grip ice.

I had a slight bad experience with the Nittos. See this thread: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/g-class/1202105-another-nitto-owner-2.html?highlight=nitto And if you read on page 1 of the thread, then you can see that i really really wanted to like the Nittos but it was just not for me and my needs.

I can tell you that, in MY experience with both tires, the Nittos had a slight annoying hum on the highway that is NOT present on the BFG AT KO.

And remember, i am not giving the BFG AT KO the thumbs up because i have them on my truck...i don't. I have Firestones. I have had both of the tires mentioned...and i still feel that BFG AT KO is the better tire overall. You get what you pay for.

Hey,all I know is driving a 3rd gen back to back,one with BFGs and my truck,the Nittos are superior in wet/snow traction period and I'm not trying to play a favorite since I already have Nittos.

I drove on a few sets of BFGs from '93-'02 on a couple of Toyota trucks and the Nittos are just better on the street and dont' wear like bricks after a few years like the BFGs do and BFGs have more frequent balancing issues than the Nittos.

Like I said BFGs rock off road but for a DD tire there much wiser and cheaper options. BFGs are a bit overated period.

I would love to see a head to head test with these two tires on and off road and dry grip and wet traction and control.

Plus you gotta consider the price since BFGs would've cost me over $800 vs the $600 I spent on my Nittos.

Nittos are gaining in popularity since I've noticed more and more people jumping off the BFG bandwagon and going with Nittos and their comments echo mine after a season on the TGs.

BFGs primarily ride their popularity since are kinda the incumbent tire in the A/T tire wars and most are bought solely on looks alone since most people seem to be into form over function nowadays and looks do rule with the majority of the populace.

My neighbor has a set of KOs on his new Denali that will NEVER see off road and IMO he made a very poor choice for a pavement only tire but it's the popularity that drive BFGs sales than actual performance aspect of the tire.

Nuff said;people should do research on tires (and I don't mean the mostly clueless comments on TireRack) and see what truly suits their needs and budget and make the smart choice for truck.


That's my two cents and I'm just giging my honest opinions and personal experiences and now people can make an educated choice.
