BFG All terrain reviews

Really?

Is that why they released the first off road rock crawling specific tire the BFG Krawler?

Or maybe that's why Baja 1000 is typically won by someone rolling BFG Bajas TAs?

Or why they often sponsor Top Truck Challenge and so many other off road events?

Or the several redesigns of the BFG M-T in recent years? How many times has super swamper done a tread overhaul?

Of course they do, they have big trucks and booths set up at all the events. But the AT tire is nothing special. There are allot of other choices, I don’t think BFG keeps up. They rely too much on their name.

Koz, "even in sand"?? Dude, any street tire is great in sand! In fact, tires with aggressive lugs are not good in sand because they have a tendency to dig in sand. So, you saying how well it does off-road, "even" in sand means absolutely nothing. My Prius tires would do wonderful in sand, as long as i keep momentum and air down (which are the basic principles of sand driving). So, your highway bias "AT" tire should do well in sand, but that does not give it much off-road credibility. Your REVO2 competitors include: Michelin LTX m/s, Firestone Destination AT, and other mild "AT" tires. Basically, they are highway only tires with slightly aggressive tread pattern.

And yeah, those pics of you running thru mud puddles can be done in my old CRV.

x2. BFG ain't fading...they are one of the biggest names off-road...and their sales prove that.

I will have to agree with you about sand. The old school MTRs sucked in sand. It was like driving around with a bunch of shoves on your tires just digging you deeper and deeper.

I should have known better then to talk with you about tires! You think everyone’s priority in tires is off road only. You do know what A/T means? ALL-TERRAIN.

The OP was looking to replace his Long Trails (you do know what type of tire Long Trails are? Yes a highway bias tire) and was thinking of replacing them with an A/T type (possibly BFG KOs).

To the OP, the BFG KOs are great off-road but any of the other A/T tires mentioned on this thread are better on-road and are much better ALL-TERRAIN tires. The KOs are not very good in bad weather also (My personal experience). Then there is the cost, KOs are probably the most expensive A/T tire sold. If on-road (and bad weather) and high cost are not a concern then by all means, get them.

Yet, you still miss the big picture...ALL-TERRAIN. REVO2 is far from being a true all-terrain.

C'mon guys, remember this is asking for BFG A/T reviews rather than your personal differences.

CXS, you said you had 3 bad experiences with those tires, were they all bought at the same time? Say, you bought all 4 tires as a set, and 3 of those did that sidewall split. Personally I have never seen a tire do that, it seems more like a defect, which is why I am wondering if you had a bad "batch" of the A/T? Just throwing that out there??

As far as the All Terrain argument, I have to agree with Thai on this. An A/T tire is exactly what it says, ALL TERRAIN. On road performance is only one of the factors, sand, snow, mud, rock, loose gravel, grass, etc. So when people complain about how bad a tire is on the road, well that is only a small part of what an all terrain tire has to be "good" at. If someone made a tire that was great at all of those then we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

I also have to agree the LTX M/S 2, is a direct competition with the RevoII, don't get me wrong I really like both of those tires if I am on the road 75% of the time but for anything off road, I don't put a lot of trust in them. I would take the BFG A/T. Yes the latter may be better on the road but I never minded the BFG A/T street manners so I don't need a All Terrain tire to be any better than the BFG A/T on the road, I want it to be better in ALL TERRAIN!

My thought is that when new car manufactures make a limited edition off road vehicle they normally use BFG all terrains, Hummer, FJ cruiser trail edition, Dodge powerwagon etc. That is good enough for me.

dam and I thought I would get some good info on tires. but ended up wasting my time reading about a few forum members in a Political debate.

something like a South park episode.

wow.

:sleepy:

have fun

I thought there was some good info in there, people giving their personal opinion on the tire. I guess you should have just went on BFG's website?

I did my best and I'm one of the few people that has a fair amount of experience on BFGs,5 years on the nittos and now about a year and a half on the Duratracs and as far as an overall AT tire the Goodyears are the best IMO but if you offroad like a crazy man and a lot and fear a sidewall puncture then BFGs might suit you a bit better and if you spend alot of miles on the street with the occasional trail run then the Nittos might fit the bill but I'm sold on the Duratracs for the less than 9000 miles a year I see and the 15-20 off road trips I take a year.

as much as I hate to... :iagree:... most reviews of BFG A-Ts seem to end up like this one did. Before I bought mine when I was researching them I found the same thing in other places. The tires have been around forever (since the 70s) and a lot of people have experience with them so you're gonna a lot of strong opinions.

The bottom line is people who don't have any trouble out of them swear by them as they are one of the most reliable and proven AT tires on the road.
But there are people who have bad experiences, and those people are going to hate the tire and tell others not to buy them because of the trouble they went through. I have yet to read a review of someone who had several sets of a tire they had a bad experience with and if you look around you'll find someone who has had a horrible experience with any tire that has been around very long.

BFG ATs have problems, they're louder and more violent than non-true A/Ts like but quieter and smoother (in my experience) than other true A/Ts. They're also not as good off road as some other true AT tires but from what I've seen better than the non-true ATs. Also someone said they were too expensive, my KOs were cheaper than more aggressive ATs (and Revos) and more expensive than less aggressive tires.

A true all terrain has a pretty open tread and aggressive sidewall like: BFG ATs, Duratracs, Baja ATZs, TSL Thornbird, or PC Xtreme AT. They are also never P-rated passenger tires, usually don't have UTQG ratings or mileage warranties, and have more plies and high load ratings.

A non-true AT has a more close tread with much more siping in the individual lugs and quieter/less aggressive sidewall lugs like: Revo, Destination AT, Dynapro ATM, TerraGrappler, or Silent Armors. All of these tires can be purchased in P-rated Passenger series sizes, usually have at least 40-50K mileage warranties, UTQG ratings, and lower load ratings.

The problem with this reasonsing is that it only takes ONE bad off-road trip for you to realize the quality of your tire. Lets face it, there are better things to do on a trail then to change a flat tire...in addition to pissing off others who are stuck behind you because you went cheap on a tire (not necessarily you RonM, but in general).

Now, if you tell me that you mainly off-road on mild terrain to get to a fishing spot, then yeah, get any tire you want. But, take your example RonM, you do take yours truly off-road...and do some rock climbing,etc.. Therefore, even though you ONLY take a few trips a year, it is worthwhile to have a good tire, maybe even one that favors off-road over on-road...simply because you are more bound to run into issues off-road than you do on-road (if you drive like a normal person with a high COG SUV!).

But, i am glad that you did not preach again those silly aqua channels! :D

Any tire can fail and I've been off roading for the last 7 years (and the years '89-97) and no tire has failed me yet but I do also respect the limits of my truck and I'm careful off road so I can't see compromising my on road perfromance just for better protection from a small chance I'd get a flat on the trail. Off road durability is the strong point of a BFG but otherwise they leave a bit to be desired as a solid daily driven AT tire from my POV. It's all what your priorities are.

If I cut a sidewall on the trail it'll be at a speed most likely be under 10mph but if I lose control in the rain/snow at 60mph because of weak hydroplane resistance then I've got bigger issues than just a flat and the Duratracs simply feel more planted than any of the BFGs I've driven on in the rain and snow.

I'm not trying to argue just giving an opinion so others can make a decision from all of our comments since nobody is really right or wrong.

Has there been any documented accident from hydroplaning with BFG AT KO?? (Honest question) In the years that i had BFG AT KO, my stability control never went off...not even once during rain...and we get some bad rainstorms here in TX....

Ron,

I would love to give those Goodyears a chance but for the 18" limited wheels, I can't get a size that will fit.

Everything I have read and seen about the Goodyears make them sound like a good tire. I can't comment about them since I have never ran them before but I can say the BFG's are at the top of my list from both my experience and they fit my truck.

It is good to hear that you think the Goodyears seem to be as good off road and better on road vs the BFG. Like you said it is another opinion, which is good.

Another thing I think people forget is when they replace their worn out old tires anything "new" is going to feel better and provide more traction, etc. That is something a lot of people forget about when they are writing a review on their new tires.

I never had any issues with the 3 pairs I have run through, again that is my experience. We have rain, snow, slush, etc. here in WI.
