BFG AT vs. Hankook ATM RF 10

I did a search just haven't really found what I am looking for.

I have always run BFG AT or MT's on my past vehicles. Loved the tires, only complaint was the price but they were worth it in the end because they seemed to last a long time.

Now I am looking for AT's for the 4Runner = 265/65/18

I want to go for the BFG's but I really want to give these Hankooks a try. Here is what I have come up with:

I need a tire that is good in pretty much everything, especially deeper snow. I have went through quite a bit with the BFGs where I surprised myself. I know they work well for me. I a fine with the on road manners also.

The tread especially on the sides seems less aggressive on the HK's vs the BFG. So anyone with snow experience between the 2 tires, please help.

The road noise on the HK's is probably less because of the less aggressive tread plus the pattern, but that doesn't bother me too much since I was fine with past BFG's.

Not sure about the mileage I will get out of them, comparing.

I read a comparison on them online where the testers were impressed with the HK's but that test seemed more in rock/desert stuff. I am in the snow sand, mud, mix stuff. So I can't really get much from that test.

I also noticed neither has the snowflake on them, which surprised me a bit.

The price is about $350 cheaper for the HK's, which is considerable. The price being a big difference, I am having a hard time making the decision. I could buy the HK's take another $200 and put an exhaust on.

Maybe it is also the whole BFG is the standard in AT tires so giving the HK's a chance kind of scare me, like making a $700 mistake.

I have also looked into the Revo2 but I am nixing that one since I think it is even less aggressive than the HK and costs more. Also the Geolander seems to be the same as the HK. So I would prefer the BFG or HK.

Any help, advise or suggestions would be great!

Over the past few year I have ran Nitto Terra Grapplers, BFG ats, Toyo Open Countires, and Revos. This past winter I lifted my 2005 4Runner. I called my tire guy to buy a set of 265/70/17 terra grapplers. He told me about the Hankook tire, and said if I didn't like them he would buy them back. The hankooks were the best price in the size. I have ran them in the snow just a few times but it was nothing deep. Just several inches at most. These tires seem to hold the road well. I have had them in the mud and they do well to clean out with just the slightest wheel spin. Hope this helps.

I have hankook rh07's on my 4runner and they are the quietest tire I have had to date. Love them and am going to order some for my sports car soon....

I've had michielins, nittos, kuhmo's and dunlop's.

I really like my rf10's, but so far all I have is about 7-8k hwy miles, no off road. From what I've read, they are excellent performers in the snow, everyone I've seen mention it was complementing them. I do think they are a tad bit more street oriented than the BFGs, but you have less road noise and substantial cost savings. I can't do a direct comparison of the two, and since I have no experience with the BFG, I'll leave it at that.

I'm a BFG guy as well. Although, I have never ran them on the 4runner just my pickup trucks. Currently I am running some 265/65/17 yoko ats on the runner. I just turned 33k miles on them tonite. They have lots of tread left but they have always seemed squishy and soft. The time has come for me to lift the 4runner. Next week if all goes as planned. Also in the cards for next week is some Hankook rf10's in the 255/75/17 size. BFG's have always done a great job in all the ugly conditions I put them through. The only problem was that they don't make an AT tire in that size. Some folks on here swear by the hankooks and the online reviews are impressive too. Hopefully being a P series tire won't make them too soft. I could have gone to a 265/70/17 but I am curious about the 255's. Also I kind of like having the wheels/tires tucked in a little. It helps keep the mud and rocks from hitting the paint as much. I'm planning a trip to ND for new year's and it snows alot here as well so hopefully the hankooks do good.

Like I said earlier, I haven't heard anything bad about the HK's but I haven't heard anyone say they are better than the BFG's in the snow, mud, sand, etc.

Killing me here!!! Maybe I will just pull the trigger on the HK's??

For me it would be a unfair comparison also because all the vehicles in the past I have run BFG's on are the simple no electronics involved 4 wheel drive systems. So I am thinking with the HK's on the 4runner they would feel the same if not better than my past BFG's.

I also noticed the tread depth is deeper on the BFG's which usually makes them better in the nasty stuff plus I would think you would get more miles out of the tire.

I will see if anyone else chimes in but I am also going to look at a HK in person to see how they look compared to a BFG.

Goodyear Duratrac's guys. End of story. I had many sets of BFG, both MT and AT. The Duratracs are the PERFECT compromise tire. Great looks, more aggressive than the AT's, snow rated, not too loud on the road, and studdable.

check out the Geolander tire by Yokohama, I just got some 265 75 16, love em, real smooth and great offroad. good price, can't wait to see how they do in snow

My own search for BFG verses HK

I also went through a lot of research and found that Peterson's 4wheel and off road did a comprehensive test both on and off road with BFG, Hankook and Toyo. I won't spoil it for ya but this did help in my deciding to go with Hankook.

I really want to give these Hankooks a try.

You might be interested in knowing that they scored 2nd in overall traction in the recent Consumer Reports AT tire tests. They were unsurpassed on snow and ice, and yielded the top spot to Kuhmo KL78 only because of being one notch lower (very good) in dry braking. However, tread life and rolling resistance were better for Hankook Dynapro ATM.

Posting from my phone so this will be short. I've got over 30k miles on my Hankook ATMs. They were excellent tires for the first 15K miles. In the last 15K miles, performance has really suffered. I've got probably 50% tread left, but I'll be replacing them soon simply because I don't feel safe with them. My main issue is traction on wet pavement. I'm happy we don't have much snow here, because I can honestly say I would be terrified to drive in it. I've ran Hankooks on my vehicles for several years now, always been a great tire. However, I'll never buy another set of the ATMs.

i ran hankooks for less then 25k miles. they were great tire when new . but they seen to wear real fast. i personally think they are a waist of money. but you get what you pay for. like swamp rider stated. they werent as good once there worn down. i was gona try to get throught the winter. but they would have never lasted. i just got bfg rugged terrains. i realy like them. they got some nice grip.
