BFG ATs v. MTs

I have the TA KOs now, but wondering how much less practical the MTs are for primarily on-road use (long distance trips; work commute).

I love the more aggressive look. I enjoy the low noise of the ATs, but if the MT noise level is marginally louder, wouldn't mind getting a new set.

I hear some aren't that bad, but every one I've driven at speeds over 30 is pretty loud.

I'm used to some super swampers and buckshots, but even the less agressive mudders have deterred me so far... I love the look, but I think I'm going agressive all terrain next time.
 
I had 2 sets of BFG MTs on my old truck, they are a GREAT tire for looks & off road (and on road too if you want a MT) but I wouldn't recommend them if you're that concerned with ride quality and noise level. I had those 2 sets as well as 3 sets of Goodyear MT/Rs and they were all a good bit louder than the BFG ATs that I have now.

Buckshots or swampers do not compare to BFG MTs in noise level. I have had friends with all swampers (thornbirds, tsls, boggers, tsl sx, etc.) and they are not at all comparable to BFG MTs, they are WAYY louder. Buckshots (bias-ply or maxxis radial) are also much louder, I'm not sure why (maybe something to do with price), but several of my friends have had them and they are a much louder tire than the BFG and Goodyear MTs.

I put the ATs on my 4runner though so that says something about my feelings towards their on-road performance (since the 4runner is 2wd & rarely off road). I wanted the MTs but couldn't justify price (when you factor in treadwear), noise, & ride quality.
 
On my full sized Bronco I had much more noise (especially at highway speeds) and about 50% less tread life with the BFG MT's versus the BFG AT's.
 
I like my MT's... my vehicle is my DD, mostly city. But I do offroad as well, and for wheeling they are great of course. As far as on the road, I couldn't care less about road noise since I never drive without music on anyways. So can't comment on that. But I think they handle just fine (but I'm not a very picky guy). You definitely can "feel" the more aggressive tread at speeds lower than 30mph, but that doesn't bother me one bit

THEROK I have several friends who drive 4X4 Tundras, using a mixture of BFG A/T and M/T shoes. After having ridden with them many miles I would say while the noise difference is noticable, it relatively minor and you get used to it quickly. However the difference in performance in mud or slop is huge. BFG A/T in particular are questionable in mud.

The other poster was right about M/T have huge differences in noise amounts depending on the brand. The BFG is fairly quiet, so is the Goodyear with Kevlar. The M/T that consistently gets rave reviews for being suprisingly quiet on the road is the **** Cepek Mud Country. Fortunately it also gets rave reviews for mud performance and is even better in sand. Another candidate for suprisingly quiet M/T tires is the Toyo, however it's quite expensive.
 
If you are talking about the new BFG mud terrain km2 tires they are very quiet. I have them on my Jeep and can not believe how quiet they are, just a little noisier than the BFg all terrains on the 4runner. The old style bfg mud terrains are noisier.
 
If you want a quiet mud terrain then I would look into toyo m/ts. They are really quiet and I got 65k miles out of a set. Can't complain about that :D
