1st gen Rubicon had MT/R, which was a good tire, but wore/balance horribly for most owners and suck in mud. They were identical to the aftermarket Goodyear MT/R.
For the 2nd gen Rubicon (2007-up), Jeep contracted with BFG to make a special variant of the BFG M/T. Jeep wanted small modifications to the tread to make it more "all-season" friendly (more bite area for rain, ice and snow). (I believe that they wanted something quieter too.) So, BFG came out with a Rubicon-specific M/T. It is standard on all Rubicons from factory.
The bad news is that this Jeep BFG M/T is only available in Rubicon stock size. You cannot buy the same tread design in other sizes...i was really hoping that BFG would adapt the tread design to other sizes so that i can buy them, but it never happened.
The good news is that if you have 17" rims, then you can get them dirt cheap from Rubicon owners (who want other tires) or from TireRack/Discount Tire because they can't sell them due to limited market.
As i have stated many times before, this Rubicon BFG M/T is a great bargain IMHO and i envy those that have them! I testdrove the 2007 Rubicon a few years ago and was quite impress with the BFG road manners (relatively quiet, more so than my old Firestone Destination M/T).
And yes, these Rubicon BFG M/T are significantly better than MT/Rs IMHO.
