hi all I'm rely contemplating about getting rid of stock dunflopies and I've narrowed it down between 2 tires, the BF Goodrich A/T KO and Toyo Open Country A/T i just wonder if any here has had both and which do u like better ? i was all about getting the BFG's but then i heard that as of late that the BFG's have had problems like death wobble due to uneven tread wear and the tread is not lasting as long as there said to. also wondering if did have both or one of them do either ride as smooth as the dunflopies thats only thing i like about is that have a smooth ride to them.
thanks you

Toyos are similar to the Nittos and in my experince with BFGs too I find the Nittos are a solid improvement on dry and wet traction and are cheaper. I got 35k on my Nittos and won't hesitate to buy another set.

My T4R came with Toyos. Not sure the name of them (Proxes I think), and they are 17". I like them. Although, for a A/T tire, they do not have the aggressive look. They have the fast water shed "chevrons" tire tread.
When I researched them, they look just like the ones I have a link to.Toyo tire link

the search button is a beautiful thing...
both have their pros and cons..I went with the Toyo Open Countrys. Great city tires, cheaper, and smoother on pavement and gets the job done. BFG's are better for offroading. Ride isint as smooth, but sexy as hell.

I, of course, had the opposite experience to you. I prefer BFG over Nittos as an all-purpose tire. With the highway hum/whistle of the Nittos (that i heard on my G), i prefer a few other tires over Nittos. Of course, i shouldn't criticize Nittos too much, my current tire (Firestone M/T) makes a whole lot more noise! :D

Nittos TG = Toyo OC (same parent company, same materials, just slightly different tread design)

My 3rd gen never has been quiet enought to notice tire noise also I use the radio all the time. Nittos do have a hum but nothing that noticeable.

BFGs would be my 2nd choice since they are hard to beat off road but it's the highway speed wet manners that make me a little nervous.

What will you be using your rig for? Daily Driver? Off-road?

I used to drive mine daily until I bought a commuter. I went from the crappy Dunlop AT20's to BS REVO's. The REVO's were an excellent all-around tire--good wet traction, snow traction, road handling. I had BFG's on my old Jeep, but can't really compare tires on two different vehicles. But I will say that I liked REVO's much better, but it could be mostly the car.

On my next set, I am going to try out the Nitto TG's. If I don't like them, I'll probably end up going back to the REVO's or getting some LTX A/T's.

That is why you need to get a 4runner with stability control. :D

Alright, now i'm re-thinking the BFG's and might go back to my original choice which were the Nitto's. What kind of uneven tread wear do the BFG's experience'?

Just put in an ARB unit.

VSC + ATRAC + AWD + Locker(s) = win. :bigok:

I wish my wallet was bottomless but I'd rather lift it and slider my current Runner which will be soon and the OEM locker is hard to beat and it's reliable. ATRAC and AWD would just be real nice on the street in the snow.

To be fair, OEM locker has been the problem among Tacomas and FJ owners. Apparently, the teeth of the gears or something on these OEM lockers are not particularly strong, given Tacoma's and FJ's weight. Your 4runner is lighter, which may explain why it's been OK on the 3rd gen 4runners...but it does show that it is NOT the strongest locker out there.

I have heard that if you get the ARB locker unit, then it actually strengthens the axle gears...thereby making the rear axle stronger than stock.

So, technically speaking, a 4th gen rear axle with ARB locker is indeed/rumored to be stronger than your OEM axle with locker.

I'm glad to know there could be issues with the rear locker and will pay closer attention to mine but it's been working great for me. I couldn't afford an aftermarket locker anyway and am glad to put my money toward other mods.

I wonder if Toyota redesigned the locker with the newer trucks since I never have read any issues with the previous gen Tacos but it's probably due to weight.

Weight and more engine power in the newer models.

Toyota really needs to redesign it then since that was a big plus on the older gen Tacos and Runners and doesn't help Toyotas questioned quality issues as of late.
