Black Gap Road pics to follow. This is the only "unimproved" backcountry road in the park. The Runner made shrimp of it, didn't even have to use the locker. The Dunlops though, well that's another story. If I didn't have the tire warranty they'd be gone for some Michelins or Revos, something with a little grip on the dirt, mud, and snow.

Going down the same road. There was a large boulder (large= 1' or so high) not pictured that I had to get one wheel on or I'd scrape the side of the step rails turning around it. I nudged it a little to far on the inside of the front right and came down on it hard enough to crease the skid plate and throw off the alignment for the trip back. Need a lift kit.

Last but not least, here's my Betsy giving her five-finger approval for the lift kit...oh, and for the hell-of-a-day we had in Big Bend NP.
Calling all Texans, let's get a trail ride and camp out organized. Central Texas has some excellent places to go. Anyone game or have open plans drop me a PM.

We enjoyed the trip but both of us are originally from Arizona so the desert was not too impressive as it might be for say, a Yankee, which I imagine BB would look akin to the moon surface in some of the parts we traveled. If you go to camp, make sure you do so in the Chisos Mountain Range. In less than a 30 mile drive you go from a desert floor at 105 degrees to piney woods in the 50's with black bears and mountain lions to boot.
There is also an abandoned quicksilver mine that was fun to tool around in. It is about a 1/2 mile hike off of the backcountry roads. There's warning signs everywhere saying not to touch any of the mines contents for fear of the high mercury content left behind when the processing portions of the mine were abandoned. All in all a nice trip for those who like to get outdoors and hike a bit.

Camping sounds like a great idea. Thai and I were thinking of go to http://katemcyrocks.com/. I just ordered a travel trailer that will be ready mid April. This would be a great place to camp and off-road.
I also would be up for camping anywhere else. I have been to a few of the state parks and they are also really nice. Kerrville has a great city park on the Guatalope. If you mountain bike, they have some good trails.
I am up for it.

Sorry Thai, not enough lead time. With 30 days or so I can get just about any day off and have a five day stretch.
We are planning a trip to Huntsville in April but it will have to be during the weekdays this time. I know most of us are usually available only on weekends, but in EMS our schedules rotate, which is nice if you're wheeling with other EMS peeps but not for those in the corporate world. My schedule is 24-hours on, 48 off and Betsy works in 911 with a 5-day, rotating days off type schedule.
For April, our days off coincide on April 17th and 18th. We plan on leaving Austin the morning of the 17th and camping at Huntsville State Park (with the alligators) overnight, wheeling until the afternoon of the 18th and heading back to Austin that evening. General Sams definitely looks like the place we'll go.
In the Austin metro, I can do day trips just about any day you wish as my time off locally is plentiful. If I'm not on shift or on the boat, a PM and phone call and I'm there.
