Big Brake Kits?

I recently purchased a 98T4r that is completely stock. I came from a highly modified subaru impreza. My previous car weighed 2800lbs and had 6 piston calipers and 332mm rotors. That car stopped on a dime. Recently someone slammed there brakes on in front of me. I stomped the 4runner brake pedal at about 30mph and the 4runner began to slowly roll into a stop. I had to swerve to avoid the car, this freaked me out a little bit.

This experience has motivated me to start researching what the BBK options are on the 4runner. The 4runner weighs in at about 5,300lbs so making it stop quickly is going to be a challenge. Is there anybody out there that has tried various larger caliper/rotor combinations on these trucks yet?

Search for "Tundra brakes". There are two sizes . Some fit with some wheels and the other will fit with others.

I think someone here has done a rear disk conversion also.

It should take a few hours. Very easy swap. Justcheck to make sure the brakes will fit under your rims.

Just know your 4runner will never stop like that Scooby did (I'm sure you knew that) unless you put on MASSIVE truck brakes which will likely require 20"+ rims...

edit: And as others have said, search "tundra brakes" here for the most economical way to upgrade your brakes. I just put on the "smaller" of the two upgrades; 199mm S13WE Tundra calipers with Brembo Tundra rotors (Model #25534) and the rig now stops beautifully.

A 98 4Runner does not weigh anywhere near 5300 pounds, you are referring to the GVWR, which is the vehicle plus its maximum interior load carrying capacity combined. 3rd gens weigh about 4,000 lbs., and I would agree the Tundra 232mm swap is the way to go, I swapped out the rubber lines for stainless while I was in there.

I just had my brakes switched to the Tundra rotors and Tundra 199mm calipers too. The difference is noticeable, and at least no more worries about warping rotors!

Just as an FYI, if you go with the smaller 199mm calipers, you will still need to trim the calipers or put wheel spacers on, if you have the same setup as me. I have a 98 with the 16 inch six spoke rims.

As another FYI, the S13WE 199mm Tundra calipers fit fine under my factory 5 spoke wheels.
