Big brother?

I just hit 4800 miles. "Oil service soon" message came up.
But this is not what I'm asking about...

Two days later my dealer calls "Let's schedule service appointment"
Do they know my mileage? Or they know about message?
-----
Thank you for all the responses. Sound like they do know my mileage.
Would anybody know how to opt out of Service Connect?

I have basic 2022 head unit (the one without navigation) I went through Settings on it and I went through settings on the Toyota App on my phone, and I don't see anything like that. Would it be in Android Auto?
I found subscriptions screen (shop-scroll-manage subscriptions) it has two "Trial Available" options and that's all, no "Service Connect"

Thank you!

What year? The later ones do display info on the app. In the end the dealer isn't going to do anything at 5K miles but I wouldn't use them for service anyway.

in today's world, sadly, all electronic devices connected to the internet are collecting data. your car is no exception since data collection and exploitation is big $$$. there was likely a privacy policy you had to agree to with any sort of app or maybe even the navigation on these newer vehicles or maybe even when you purchased the car and signed for it. many people just click the little box that says "I have read and agree to the privacy terms" and go about their day

I don't think this is a coincidence. expect ads to start popping up if you frequent certain restaurants or stores too

yeah mine gives me the dealer service pop up. Gives me the options to call direct for service or have them call me..or ignore it and it dissapears.

I understand all that, I just wonder if anybody knows anything how my information is transferred and if there is an option to stop it.

Is it on your head unit? You probably have an advanced one? mine is basic without navigation.

mine is 2016 limited. Its actually programmed from the dealer it came from, not the dealer I bought it from. I have standard LIMITED head unit, with NAV. Just shows up and covers whole screen. Its like orange and black colours with touch button options, direct call, ignore, do not show again etc.

I believe that's called "Service Connect" in the suite of connected packages that are activated when the vehicle is put into service. You can opt out.

you should be able opt out of these services. but you might lose some functionality. obviously any apps you are using and any internet connectivity from your vehicle needs to be disabled and not used

Correct. I have this feature on mine. I only keep it because I like the remote start (not line of sight)...plus lock/ unlock and other kinda neat stuff. Also keeps track of drives, geo fence, other handy features if you let someone borrow car...or if its being serviced. You can also locate it on a map if stolen (until thief disables it).
So yes it reports mileage to your dealer.
I figure if you have a smart phone or breathe you are being tracked in some shape or form.

Remote connect, which provides the remote start, location of the car on a map etc. is not the same as service connect which reports your mileage to your dealer.

Just wait until the pop-up says you didn’t put Toyota 75w oil in the transfer case. Lot’s of teeth gnashing here.

Your car broadcasts your data to Toyota with or without a smartphone. It does so via a device in your instrument panel called the DCM (data communications module.)

Have a look at this thread wherein I describe my efforts to disable the tracking telemetry on my ‘22 4Runner.

Here’s another much longer thread discussing the same issue.

Have a look on this page which details Toyota’s Privacy Policy. Be sure to read through all the tabs on the left side of the page.

Basically you can’t use remote features for lock/unlock/start without also consenting to big brother for maintenance reminders.

I get the feeling that most dealers dont even service the diffs or propeller shafts. I think alot of people dont even think about it.

I don't own a smart phone but it is rather disquieting that Toyota will be monitoring my breathing when my 2023 4Runner is finally delivered.

I purchased my 2023 ORP a few weeks ago. The sales guy tried to rush me through setting up the Connected Services. Luckily, I already had a Toyota account but did not have my password with me and, the email address associated with the account is not on my phone. So we could not set it up.
This morning I got an email reminder to complete my setup - the email lists a phone number to disable these features:
