Big Problem!

I cannot take the head off! On the left side of the head underneath, halfway from front to back, there is a water tube (metal) that connects to bottom of head (left side) It is connected with 2 screws. It is rusted stuck or something. I tried WD-40 and pounding on it and it just wont come off. My dad wants to cut it off! He wants to cut off the metal tubing and replace it with rubber, my thing is I dont want him cutting anything off, and if he does, what if he screws up?

Any suggestions?

Have you gotten the screws out? If not try an impact wrench. Motorcycle shops use these all the time to remove screws stuck in aluminum cases. Also you might try heating the area with a torch, but be careful near gas and oil .

Another big problem. 2 head bolts stuck on! Actually 3, One head bolt BROKE OFF! The other two are unscrewed but are being held in by pressure? Maybe the head warped? But the 2 bolts dont want to come out!

I'll go with cut the tube too. If it's completely stuck and the heads are rounded off on the bolts, cut it. It you're just afraid of breaking them off don't be. Go ahead and snap off the heads and remove the pipe and then when you have the head off you can either use ez outs, vise grips or even take it to a machine shop and have them do the removal for you.

If you do end up cutting it off, I'd suggest getting a new one though instead of the rubber tube. The rubber tube will probably work, but they used metal from the factory for a reason.

As for the head bolts, all I can say is to snap them all off and remove the head and then you just have to figure out how to get them out after that.

Well the head bolts arent stripped, they are unscrewed enough and since the threads dont thread all the way from top to bottom wonce the threads stopped it didnt come up anymore.

I was thinking maybe the head warped slightly and is pussing pressure on the bolts. They need to basically come straight out but is being held in. They arent stripped. If I stick a bolt back in the head, it sinks down LOWER than the stuck bolts, meaning its past the threads, know what i mean?

Try taking a crowbar than and prying up under the head of the bolt while you turn the bolt with a wrench. Sometimes water gets in the bolt holes and corrodes the threads so it gets stuck like that. One or two crowbars prying up under the bolt by a helper will work wonders.

you probably have the head off by now but here goes anyway. The rear head bolts are carboned up as is common on 22re with egr. The broken head bolt will come out once you do get the head off. WARM it up with propane torch to loosen carbon build up. The water tube to which you refer is actually bolted to the timing cover with a bypass hose going to the intake. If you have already cut it I have a used replacement just e-mail me at [email protected]. The carboned head bolts can be wire brushed once the head is off and removed. REPLACE ALL HEAD BOLTS. More will break either when retorquing head or after the job is done.

Update: Head still on, got the 2 bolts out, leaving the broken bolt on, I figured we can try to list the head out and over it leaving the bolt there. He has been trying to pry the head up but its not moving, I think there is a water tube bracket at the back of the head, its hard to get to, i can feel it. Thanks for the help. Any idea about the bracket in the back?

x2 on torch and crowbar idea. what is it with toyota and the bolts they used? i keep on constantly snapping them, even with saturation with oil or wd40. and im going gentle and not torquing on them. i snapped 2 when taking my roll bar off. good luck on your head bolts though.

Don't forget the small bolt in front of the cam gear that goes into the timing chain cover!
