Bigger Rims/Tires and Odometer/Speedometer

Hello folks,

I am rather hesitant to move up from my three spokes to the 17" Tundra rims because of the differences they will pose to the speedometer and odometer. I am a little OCD when it comes to these things and I'd rather keep it stock if possible. I've looked around and there seems to be no fix so I though I'd bring it up again and see if anyone has anything.

My overall intent is for looks and 231mm Tundra Brake Upgrade.

I currently have the stock 265/70/16 with three spokes and it reads 2 miles faster (70 on odometer, 68 on GPS).

265/70/16's are a stock size. They shouldn't be any different. Going up in wheel size won't effect your speedo unless you go up in tire size too.

The GPS has a certain error built-in, and the stock speed/odo has an accuracy tolerance too. So a small difference between the two isn't a problem.

If you move to a taller tire (regardless of the measurements) it will throw the odo/speedo off by some percentage. The taller the tire the larger the percentage.

For example, a 4 cyl/5 spd truck with stock 28" tall tires. If you jump to 33" tall tires (a really common swap) you'll be off by about 10%,so when the speedo says you're doing 50 mph, you're really doing about 55 mph.

My spedo was actually more accurate when I jumped to my 32s. If you are so OCD about it you could always take it to the dealership and you go to the 17s and get it re calibrated.

I've looked online at a tire size calculator. According to it, a 265/70/17 is bigger than a 265/70/16. I'd be off 3.3%. Tire size calculator

The sticker on the door jamb says my vehicle's tire size are 225/75/15. It has the 265/70/16 because of one of the upgrade packages offerred. Is it possible the tires are put in, but the odometers/speedometer is never recalibrated?

WrexHAmm, I already called my local dealership (Anderson Toyota of Rockford). They said they don't have the ability to do that beyond the factory.

That is correct. A 265/70-17 will be bigger than a 265/70-16.

Look on the door itself. There should be another sticker on the door jamb of the door that should have the actual tire size that came with it. My door jamb says the same. 225/75-15, but the sticker on the door itself says 265/70-16.

use a 265/65-17. this should be almost identical to your 265/70-16
