Bike Rack: Thule vs. Yakima??

Need some help here. I'm just looking for a simple rack system to mount to the factory roof racks on my 4R. The main reason I want one is to make my 4R look really mean and tough........j/k.........

Actually, the main reason is that I'm looking for a roof-mounted bike rack. I'm wanting one that will be the easiest to mount, the easiest to put the bike on/take the bike off, and last the longest. I don't even want to consider using the "ol'-straps-and-ties-all-over-the-rear-windshield" version from Walmart. The last time I used one of those, I got so pi$$ed hooking it up, and I was paranoid of the stupid thing scratching up the paint and glass the whole time I had it on.

Are there any advantages to one of these brands over the other? Or, is it basically Coke vs. Pepsi? Those are the most common brands I see for racks, so that's the reason I pulled those names out of the air. I actually read in some thread on this forum where the person said they would never go back to Yakima. Does Yakima suck in general, or was that just a lemon experience?

Any feedback from someone with experience with these roof-mounted bike racks, for one or two bikes, would be greatly appreciated.

Both are pretty similar in their set up, one has round bars (Yak) and the other has square (Thule). Yakima is American made and has a larger dealer network which may make it easier to find parts in a pinch.

I've had the same Yakima roof rack for 9 years and have never had a complaint. I use it for bicycles and kayaks and it works great for both.

There are many threads on this exact same question, do a search and you will find all your answers.

Basically it comes down to preference. I prefer Yakima. But Thule is not a bad brand.

i have the thule swinging hitch rack...

it is able to swivle and swing out with the bikes loaded and still able to open the rear hatch.
