I got an few questions.

I'm about to order new shocks to replace my old ones.

But I got an few questions,

How are the 4600's compare to the 5100's?

I do some moderate off-roading, not anything too serious..
But most likely it will be on the tarmac than the dirt.
Is there other shocks I should look into? Kyb's or ?
Has anyone ran 4600's or 5100's in their runners? I drove my buddy's discovery and it rode really nice. then again, I had not replaced the shocks on my since we had it. When we picked it up, it only had 6 miles on the odometer and now is at 213k miles.

The prices for the 4 4600's are $249.99 compare to the 5100's $299.99.

as far as i know the 4600's are considered OEM replacements, the ugly blue and yellow ones. the 5100's are zinc plated (look like brushed aluminum) so they wont rust and most have a slightly stiffer valving. Id most definitely go for the 5100's

Will you be replacing the springs at the same time? I have a 2000 so I'm very interested in what you're doing and where you'll get your parts.

I just replaced my shocks a couple days after christmas, I too bought my 97 sr5 new and it now has almost 160k on it. Made a huge difference, I bought the yellow/blue shocks off of eshox.com I believe or shox.com, they were $279 shipped, which was the cheapest I had found for all 4. I didn't replace the springs, just the shocks and it made a huge difference, I could tell right away.

I might do the springs too but depends how nice is Uncle Sam this year :biggrin2:

I looked around and the front springs are about $90 an piece and $62 an piece for the back.

i just heard someone on here today say the kyb's kinda suck... i think bucking bronco was the term used..... so too stiff...

I replaced my original shocks with the bilstein shocks from shox.com:

020. Bilstein shocks 1996 - 2002 Free shipping, set of 4 F&R #BE5-F332-H0 FR. #BE5-2451-H0 REARS. 279.00

Here are the part numbers on their site, hope it helps some. Also, I didn't replace my springs, the ride is so much better now, not sure how much better it would be if I were to have replaced the springs as well, just didn't see the need to do the springs....

I just placed an order for the 5100 bilstein for the front for now and will do a backspacer. I was gonna do the leveling kit front and back daystar. but after some advice from a friend and looking at the benefits of tthese shocks.....decided to go with the adjustable billies on the front for now and in the future will get the back set.

I'll be replacing my fronts this weekend with the 4600's. I'll take pics of the process and write up a DIY. I've been looking for one and didn't see it for a 3rd gen, so I'll make one.

That was me. We have the KYB GasAdjust shocks on ours. The fronts seem OK but the backs slap you in the back of the head every time you hit a bump.

Bilstein Prices

I also bought the Bilstein HD's (#BE5-F332-H0 FRONT, #BE5-2451-H0 REAR) from shox.com for $279, delivered. Installed them this past weekend. My original shocks had 276k on them, they were in pretty rough shape. Funny thing is I always thought shocks got soft, bouncy when they were spent. Mine actually got stiffer, harsher. The new ones work great. installation is challenging, but doable.

Just FYI, from what Steve @ Sonoran Steel says, the Bil's aren't valved correctly for the 4Runner. He actually had Bilstein custom valve them to suit the 4Runners. He sells them on his site. Might be a little more, but I'd say it's worth it.

I finally ordered the shocks and it was $290 shipped, I did look into the ones from shox.com and they were about $310 shipped.. So I went with tirerack instead. Save some cash..

I am just curious...has any ever compared the standard valved 5100's to Sonoran Steel's custom valved 5100's?

perhaps they need to settle in? Did you install yourself? If so, Any tips? Have any probs removing rusted bolts/nuts?
