Bilstein 4600

Anyone using 4600 shocks front and rear, stock coils or others? How you liking them, and wondering how they compare to 5100 series? I got the impression they're about the same feel as 5100 series but without the adjustable height in the front maybe?

The 4600's are only about $20 cheaper for 4 than the 5100's.

I have 4600's on the rear (KYB strut plus on front). I really like them. They lifted my rear over stocks (on a 2008 V6 with 120K) a bit maybe because the stock shocks were old and original. Easy to swap them out. They provide a nice firm ride.

Well, im worried now. After reading the 5100-4600, i feel that my ooff road specialist ordered me the wrong shock. I wanted to level my 4Runner, so i ordered Rough Country spacers and a set of the 4600’s for the front to help with the “dreded nose dive”. After reading that snipit, it says the 4600’s are for stock hight only. Just a thought though. The spacers are are at the top of the spring. The shock bolts in from the bottom. Wouldnt that be virtually stock hight if under the spacer?

4600 are what came on the tacomas. Plenty of us on the forum use the tacoma suspension swap (me included). They will be fine for a level.

if you want the lifted and level look, spend the money on the 5100.
the 4600 will only lift the front up when using tacoma springs, thats what i have seen in the threads.

I'm thinking more about doing the swap to 4600 shocks (almost at 150K miles), hopefully can just re-use the stock springs from the X-REAS suspension, but wondering if I should also just get new KYB mount kits, moog stabilizer bar links, and moog sway bar bushings too.... with the chance they're worn out, etc..

rather than start a new thread, I figured I'd use this one since my question is relevant.

I have a 2006 4Runner that with 135k miles that I'm considering replacing the shocks. I currently have Daystar spacers 2.5/1.5 with stock XREAS. I'm happy with the lift and general performance. In theory, I believe I could just change the shocks out to Bilstein 4600 and use the same stock springs I have in there now and it'd be a good solid replacement.

Is there any benefit at all to going with 5100's instead and eliminating the spacers and going with aftermarket springs that would net the same lift of 2.5/1.5?

4600s are not meant to be used with lift springs. They were not designed to handle extra suspension travel. Just get 5100s, Dobinsons, Eibach, or other shocks meant for a lifted application.

I know that. I have 0 intention of using 4600 with lift springs, I fully understand that they have different shock lengths for different spring lengths. Let me break down the two options

1. Bilstein 4600 with factory 4runner springs and Daystar 2.5/1.5 spacer lift.

2. Bilstein 5100 with aftermarket springs that achieve a 2.5/1.5 spacer lift.

The price difference is at least double for the 5100 + aftermarket springs. What does that achieve.

This is a RWD 4Runner that isn't really a heavy overland or desert pre-runner vehicle.

I have a set of 4600’s pre-assembled that I was going to try to put on.

Take the time to do it right. Spacer lifts to add height, but not really capability.

Shocks only control up/down motion, (unless it's using a collar to change ride height like the 5100s). These will impact ride quality and potentially range of travel since they can only compress or extend so far safely. Pick your spring first, then a shock to match.

Springs do all the work for actually supporting the truck and changing ride height. Dobinsons has a guide for their springs, that tells you the expected ride height for a particular combo of truck/drivetrain/extra weight like a steel bumper or RTT. Go put all your info into their site and pick the springs that will do what you want them to do. From there, find a compatible shock and enjoy having your truck safely perform the way you want it to.
