I was wondering if the Bilstein 5100 front shocks would work on a set of 5th gen front springs to put on my 97 4runner ? I got the front springs for free and are basically brand new but want new shocks. Anyone do this or know how it would ride? would it ride way stiff? I don't do much offroading, mainly street driving

Long answer short, 5th gen front springs will not work.

5th gen springs front springs... on the 5100's will fit and work. that is what I run on the front of my rig. They are about the same as the 99 talls so expect 1" or little more over stock.
Mine are set to second from top (pretty sure. its been a while) C clip, I have Tundra 5100's. The ride pretty good not harsh in my opinion. Its no Kings but good ride.

You will have to use your original top hat. So you will have to either buy a new one or disassemble your old one and use that one. I'm pretty sure they are the same spring rate around 550. I did all the research at one point.

They should work pretty well. Overall spring rate is likely similar with the free height of the 5th gen springs likely being a bit taller. Tundra 5100's would be my choice. Which notch you set them on would depend how tall you want it. Bottom notch would probably be around 1" taller than stock. If you didn't want to lift at all just use a factory style shock.
I wouldn't maybe a slight lift 1-2" but want it to ride comfortable on the street. I hardly ever take it offroad, 95% street driven. I looked at stock Tokicos but damn they are expensive for the front shocks. I have Tokicos on the rear but the price on rear shocks were really good.

Bilsteins are going to be a bit firmer than stock but should not be bad. I'd just get the 5100's for the 4runner and leave it at the stock setting with those springs and I'd imagine you will get 1"+.

The KYBs are mentioned as a cheaper alternative to the OEM fronts. Esp for DD use.
I've got a set of the OEM 99 tokicos for the rear also but not put on yet, how do you like them?
Ill look into the KYBs. Thanks for the advice on that. Yea don't want a really firm ride. The Tokicos with the 5th gen rear springs work well, I plan to add a trim packer to the rear for a bit extra height but the combo works good. Plus the rear Tokicos are super cheap compared to front shocks
