Bilstein 5100 softer ride

Hi all. Currently have Bilstein 5100s all around on 2007 4runner 2wd. Lift is set to 1.75 with stock coils. Ride is a little too firm, and we want to make it closer to stock. Two options come to mind:

1. Drop ride height down one click to 0.85 lift and add Toytec 1" top plate spacer, or

2. Drop ride height down to stock -0- lift setting and install Daystar comfortRide 1" top plate spacer (provides 2" front lift).

any thoughts appreciated. thanks !

The rough ride is due to the shock damping, I don't see any of those changes will affect things very much.
 
Stock coils? You get used to the 5100's. I thought they were stiff in the beginning but now I love the way they handle.
 
Just installed OME 884 and Bilstiens 5100s. I wouldn't describe the ride as rough, more firm. IMO, it handles rough roads/terrain much better than stock.

Backend is a little rough maybe, but I think that is largely due to the springs and not the shocks
 
Everyone has their own preference for the kind of ride they want and need. I want a daily driver. I replaced my 5100's the first month with 6112's. The difference is dramatic.

So what rear springs do you have?
 
Ok so after hours of research and reading comments still not 100% sure the way to go. Quick recap-2007 4runner 2wd. Stock springs, Bilstein 5100s all around. Front currently set at 1.75" lift.

Looking for a ride similar to stock (bought it used with worn out shocks so don't really know what a "stock" ride is exactly). To us ride seems too stiff at front on current setting. I want around 2" of lift (say 1.75-2.25 or around there). I came up with a few options-throwing it out there for comments:

1. Bilstein 5100 at 0" lift w/OME 883 coils and and Toytec 0.5 top spacer. Toytec website says 883 coil give 1.5" lift.

2. Bilstein 5100 at 0" lift w/OME 884 coils. Toytec website says 884 coil give 2.0" lift.

3. Bilstein 5100 at 0.85" lift w/stock coils and .75 Toytec spacer+.5 Toytec spacer stacked.

4. Bilstein 5100 at 0" lift with Daystar budget boost 1" top spacer (supposed to give about 2" total lift).

5. Bilstein 5100 at 0" lift w/Toytec/Eibach front coil.

Open to something different too (including different shocks/struts). Spend 95% of time in city driving. Cost is secondary to getting a good setup and be done with it. I've messed with this thing long enough now. :loco:

Go with ICON's for city driving. They're softer at slower speeds but firm up the faster you go on bumpy terrain. Call them and learn about the different coils for your use. Get passenger tires and forget the A/T's. A thinner sidewall will help with ride comfort. Bilstein 5100 is not a top of line comfort shock. It's a tremendously good every day shock for on and off road use and you can expect to have compromise. They're a lot better than Toyota OEM shocks but not a good as KING, ICON, FOX etc… Then again the way a shock feels is all dependent on the driver.

I'm curious to know how long you've had the 5100's installed? And since I didn't read it anywhere else in the previous comments, all shocks/struts/coil overs do have a "break in" time frame. And will feel different after some good mileage. The coil overs on my GTO took 8K to "break in"! Others correct me if I am wrong but most will be good at 2k-5k. So, maybe after some quality time with this set up you may end up loving it as many others have. I wish I had some 5100's as my stock crap is DONE. But to each their own I suppose. Good Luck!
 
Good point. I've had Bilsteins for about 1k miles now. Its definitely not a harsh ride but want to try something a little smoother for city driving since we rarely go offroad. thanks for the comments!
 
I had the same complaint about 5100's. Mine are at 1.75" with Tacoma springs.
My problems went away for the most part when I ditched my Toyo AT 2's and put on Destination AT's.
My Toyo's only had 40K on them but I will never buy those tires again. Super happy with Firestone so far.

I thought icons were digressive shocks..? That makes them stiffer at slow speeds but softer as you speed up. Doesn't make them very suitable for city driving. I felt every single pothole when I was running the v2's in the rear. Swapped out for 5100's recently, wayyyy better.

EDIT: did some research after I posted that, check this out. by DC Tundra on Tundratalk,

"ICON uses a 1026 Nitro steel shaft, while everyone else uses a 1050 steel hardened chrome shaft. What's the best ? Camburge, Bilstein, FOX, and King some of the biggest shock manufacturers all use hardened chrome shafts in their shocks. Some of those shocks cost $1200-$2400 each where money is no object and countless hours and money have been spent by race teams, that should tell you something right there. All these companies have tested the very same material ICON uses years ago and choose to use 1050 hard chromes steel.

Then lets talk dampening and how ICON is supposedly "leading the way in technology with there dampening" with their "new" technology .

Progressive valve stack : King, FOX, Camburge, Bilstein, all use a progressive valve stack on a standard piston. As the (shock) shaft speed increases, the valving gets stiffer. A linear design shock has a piston that is designed to start out with low resistance and continue to build as the speed of the shaft movement increases in a linear fashion. This type of shock has very little low-speed control, but very much high-speed control.

Digressive valving piston : ICON on the other hand, uses a digressive valving & pistons. Basically the exact opposite. As shaft speed increases, the valving gets softer. A digressive designed shock has a considerable amount of low-speed control and builds resistance as the shaft speed increases to a predetermined point where the rate digresses and stays the same as the speed increases. This type of design has good low-speed control and does not build ultra-high resistance with the high speedsassociated with bumps and holes.

ICON believes that their digressive valving/piston works the best for off-road. If that's the case, why don't any of the other LEADING manufactures use this as well. Digressive valving/pistons work great for sports cars and superduties, where you're looking for on road feel and a smooth ride on 8" lift leaf springs that dont flex on a truck that already has a harsh ride. Look at any trophy truck, class 1 car or any shocks built by Camburge, KING, FOX or Bilstein, that has thousands of hours in testing and racing and you will see why they run a linear progressive valving/piston."

Why do you think that would make a difference to the ride quality? It's the same net effect of the same spring preload and ride height.

I switched mine from 2.5" setting on stock coils to 0" setting and 3" lift spacer. Much softer ride around town, which is what you are looking for, but it doesn't seem to be as good at soaking up bumps offroad, which you aren't worried about. Someday I'll be able to afford some better quality coilovers and be all set.

t-man: I also had my 5100s set at 2.5" lift and it was too stiff for us for around town driving...so I understand correctly, you have Bilstein 5100 up front set at -0- setting and using 3" lift spacer, stock coils? Is this a top plate or preload spacer? Any problems so far with that setup as I wasn't sure you could use such a large spacer with the 5100s?

Yes you have it correct. I'm not sure what the spacer is called, I'll attach a pic. It pushes the shock down 1.5", which gives me 3" of lift. The only issue I have is I'm right at the verge of binding my cv axles because I don't have a dif drop.
I haven't read anything about this setup being an issue, but that doesn't mean somebody hasn't. You will definitely need uca's and I'd recommend a dif drop for my amount of lift. If I had a dif drop I'd run the Bilsteins at. 85" to clear my tires a little more. uploadfromtaptalk1449015770508.jpg

Great thanks for the response. Now I'm torn between setting the Bilsteins at 0.85 + adding a 2" Daystar budget boost top plate spacer (similar to t-man) or possibly going with OME replacement coil 883 or 884.

Looking for smooth driving in city 95% on city streets. Any thoughts?
