Bilstein 5100's FJ Springs & AllPro Spacers Done

Im amazed at the turn out you had with the 1.75 setting. It looks really good. I thought you'd have a little bit of a bro lift but its not nose high at all. I've read a lot in the Tacoma forums a good handful of them used the 1.75 setting with no rear lift and it turned out good. Not sure what they get on stock measurements. Definitely thinking about trying the 1.75 when I install mine this weekend. I'll have to do some "pre install" measurements first then I'll decide.

LMAO @ "Bro Lift"? First time I heard it ... haha

spring question (1st post to the forum)

I have a 2004 2WD Sport. I need to do the same thing as my X-reas shocks have been leaking for awhile. Are FJ 4WD spings the same as the 2WD? Will I have fitment issues if I find a set of 4WD springs? I'm thinking not but was curious what the experienced ones here on the forum thought.

Thanks

Both the 2wd and 4wd springs will fit. If you plan to use shocks from the FJ, make sure they come off a 2007-2009. Any year springs will be a direct swap. The 2wd springs should leave you at stock height and the 4wd springs will provide a little lift. Everyone here is using 4wd springs. I'm not sure if the 2wd springs will offer the same benefits as the 4wd springs (better ride quality).

So if you run the FJ springs and 5100s set at the setting that provides the most lift, what is the lift total, 2.5-3"? What is the point of doing this if you are still just going to run a 32" tire? I notice most FJs are able to run 33" tire stock, right?

I can't tell you the detailed explanation why, but about 3" is max for our 4runners I believe. Anytime you use the FJ springs lift amount depends on your 4runner (v6 or v8, 2wd or 4wd). With the FJ springs and 5100's at the top notch, I'm almost certain you'll end up over 3" lift (I've not ran this setup, but I've run the numbers). You can clear 33's on the 4runner, just isn't as easy as the FJ. The point is that it still gives you more clearance under the belly for off road.

Thanks, I've just read a LOT on here so far and it seems the vast majority lift their 4th gens, but they only end up putting a 32" tire on there. I was just curious why more wouldn't step up the 33" if it wasn't too big of a hassle. You have a nice 4Runner and your numerous posts have been helpful.

Thank you for the compliments.

There are several running a 285 that comes out to a 33" tire. Most here use their 4runner as a daily driver and mild off roader. For these type of people (myself being one of them), the 32's are plenty (33's only add 1/2" clearance underneath), you can get much better gas mileage, and tire price is cheaper.

Ditto on the forum's helpful comments.

I'm new to this forum but hang around a few BMW and other racing forums. They should all take lessons from this one. Very knowledgeable answers, no attitude. I'm glad I joined. Thanks to everyone, so far.

Are 5100's overkill for someone who doesn't want to lift the truck? I like how the OP's truck sits and I'm hoping for the same results. At the most, I tow with the truck but haven't gone off road. (towing is what probably killed my Xreas shocks.)

Thanks

The 5100's will allow you to level the vehicle slightly. You can use the second notch and get ~1" of lift, which will make the 4runner look much better. Even if it's an on road only vehicle, the 5100's are still a great choice. I don't have experience with others, but on road performance is much better with the 5100's than with the stock shocks. There may be better shocks out there for a non-lifted application, but the 5100's are hard to beat.

Glad you find this forum helpful. Great group of guys (and a few gals) here. I'll warn you, they love spending your money and you'll get addicted quick (at least I did)!

I have to agree. The bilstein's ride really nice. I don't miss the X-reas a bit.

Since my X-reas were leaking and I had to replace the shocks anyways. Was going to go with some sort of bilstein's instead of factory regardless. 5100 just provided the ability to easily reduce the rake which I didn't really care for. It was kinda like killing two birds with one stone :) Cars nose-down looks aggressive and indicates great braking and cornering performance; trucks nose-down just looks and feels weird - kinda like lowering a truck and putting 22" rims with low profile tires on it :)

I wouldn't have bothered to mess with anything if it hadn't been for the leaking shocks, unless I wanted to have a "true" big lift, put on huge tires, and do much more hardcore off-roading - and hurt even more from poor gas mileage. I do get on moderate trails pretty often because I often go hiking, backpacking, or shooting. But the vehicle serves to get me through the moderate trails to get to the real backpacking trail-heads - I don't "offroad" for the sake of offroading :) Most hardcore offroaders I've seen run their 3rd or 2nd generation 4runners. Or jeeps :)

1 More TOTAL NuBee Question

Are the spacers for lift or width?

I'm picking up a set of used Trail Edition Springs and shocks tomorrow. I've been told that the stock 4wd FJ springs will raise the front too much. I'm thinking that is a good thing since I too have never liked that front rake.

Has anybody just done a straight swap with the trail setup?

Who has decent prices on the 5100's?

Thanks

Brian

See the link in my sig folr info on the fj swap. It will show estimated lift amount for the various setups involving the fj springs. For the 5100s, it was who had them in stock over who had the best price, they can be hard to find in stok. I got mine from wheelers off road.

There are two typess of spacers. There are lift spacers which add height and wheel spacers which add width.

Bumping an old thread just to mention that the Op's truck is perfect. Love the look/stance/tires/everything.

Impressive and truly what I want my Runner to look like in the future. (Too bad my 265/65/17's only have about 8,000 miles on them right now...)

Truck looks great! I'm thinking about replacing shocks with 5100s but would like less squat when I tow. Is the only way to do this with HD coilovers?
