Well, I finally tried getting them on again and what a PITA. I used a tie down strap and compressed the shock, threaded the top on just enough to hold it. then slowly released the tie down till the bottom was about right then with some elbow grease and a dead blow hammer tapped it on. I cleaned the lower mount with a wire brush and some steel wool then coated with a little dollop of anti seize.
Part of it was laziness and the 100+ degree weather. I was finding a reason to NOT try i suppose...
