I have a 3rd gen '98 4runner and need new shocks. I do mostly on road driving....but still like to go off-road every so often. I want a set of shocks that will be able to handle the stress of off-road. I am trying to decide between the KYB Monomax ($256 shipped) or the Bilstein (http://www.bilstein.com/mistore/pro...&hdwt=31101&loc=101&dealer=&company_id=100484)...which i can get for $289 shipped. So price is not an issue....let me know what you think is a better all-around shock...THANKS!!! These are supposed to be a late xmas present so the quicker the better...

I would go with Bilsteins. Bilsteins is a more well-known brand...more heritage/history. Thus, it has more experience in making shocks.

On my 2nd gen. When I replaced the shocks I used KYB's and I liked them a lot. I haven't replaced the ones yet on my 3rd gen. but I will consider both next spring. I may very well go with what I know and that would be the KYB's.

Just my 02.

I put a set of Bilstein sport shocks on my '98 4WD LTD and loved them. You will be amazed at how dramatically the handling improves. Avoid the TRD-branded Billsteins, which are cheaper and less capable.

That said, you should also be aware that the ride will be a tad firmer. I didn't find this objectionable.

FWIW, there was a recall on the rear suspension of '98 'Runners, which involved replacing the rear springs and relocating the bump stops to the inside of the spring coils. The objective of the recall was to increase rear jounce travel, which is very meager on stock '97 and '98 Runners. If you haven't had this done, I'd do it. Look at your rear suspension. If the bump stops are mounted to the frame outside of the spring coils, it hasn't been done. It's a freebie.

tried kyb's and bilstein's

tried some kyb's on wife's sienna with 78k in miles...ride was better and handling was almost sporty... cost was not much more than stock or monroe's and saw they were highly rated on a ratings website...had bilstein's on s-10 blazer...they were pretty nice...ride was stiffer but handling was better...of the two i was most impressed with kyb's

Both are very good shocks but Bilsteins are better, just don't get the TRD OEM shock.
