Bought a new set of shocks to replace the worn out bilsteins on my 1995 4wd 4runner sr5. while removing the bils, I am having problems unfastening the upper nuts. there doesnt seem to be anywhere to hold the stem while twisting the nuts with a wrench. there appears to be 2 flattish sides to the very top of the stem, on top of the threads, but it wont accept any sockets, and i cant grip it with any other tools. it might be that it is stripped, but i can figure out how to get these off. please help!

Same issue on my Silverado......I was able to get a set of vise grips on the flat spots and then used a ratcheting socket on the nut itself.
If you've had the shocks on for a while you may want to hit the stud with some PB Blaster or WD-40 and then give it a try.....the rust build up on the studs can make it more difficult than it actually is to remove the nut....

I learned using a impact gun for shocks are alot easier provided you have the room to use one in there. I have a De Walt electric impact and works wonder when i got stuck trying to loosen shock shaft bolts.
