BiXenon HID as "fog" lights?

Who's done it? I don't want to do an HID conversion on the headlights because we get yearly inspections and you never know when some dork will bounce you. But "fog" lights aren't part of the inspection...

I wanna stick them in the bumper, aimed nice and low so when they're in low beam mode they actually function as fog lights. I'll wire them on their own DPDT switch so when I'm off pavement and need some illumination, I can put them in high beam mode and help light up the night.

Anyone done it? I can't see a reason not to.

Sure why not. Since your rig is lifted the lights will be basically normal car headlight height so they'd be great as auxiliary headlights. I modified my 3rd-gen's OEM projector fog lights to supplement my stock headlights, they don't illuminate as far as the OEM lowbeams but "fill in" the areas to the sides the lowbeams don't illuminate too well.

Why is it that Utah wont allow you to do a HID conversion? Just wondering.

It's not Utah, Ryan, it's Federal. HID conversions aren't legal anywhere because they aren't DOT approved. Utah requires yearly safety inspections, and some inspectors will bounce you for DOT violations.

Oh wow ****in government. I had no idea that it was federally illegal. So many people in washington have HID's in their cars. I would have never known that at all. Im glad we only have to do emmissions and after 25 years you dont have to do that even. Some cities and counties dont require emmissions either

So it's only a problem if you do the conversion yourself? What's with all the "factory" HIDs then? If we do it ourselves, we're screwed, but if Big Auto does it - no problem. F*ING hypocrites!

Your biggest issue is going to be getting everything sealed up down there with the projector since the only gens with big enough fog lights to really mount a projector in are 4th and 5th gens, but even then it'll be tight. Other than finding a way to keep moisture out and mounting them solidly there's no reason it wouldn't work.

Closest thing they have to a universal housing are their 7" sealed-beam conversions.

There are aluminum enclosures for generic "Mini H1" projectors on ebay, Retrofit DIY 2 5" Mini H1 Bi Xenon HID Projector Lens w Enclosure for Fog Lamps | eBay but it leaves the lens exposed and I don't think they're waterproof.

You could also get the compact "matchbox" bixenon projector and make a simple rectangular housing for it.
