BIZARRE...Auto Transmission NOT WORKING

This is SO bizarre for my 2002:

I go do some errands. Come home and I decide to wash the T4R. When I'm finished and go to move it into the driveway and the automatic transmission won't engage: not reverse, not drive. NOTHING!

The only way I could get the vehicle to move is when I engage the 4WD. When I disengage the 4WD, the trans again won't work. WT...F?

I'll either drive it in 4WD or have it towed to the dealer. (I'm in SoCal, Orange County)

try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting.

Sounds like it could be another 02 transfer case gone. When you run the gears back from D - P does it make a grinding noise. Happened to my 02 at about 100k, drove to pick up dinner, got back in truck and nothing worked, didn't try 4wd until after I had it towed, but a used transfer case got me going again.
