Black 4runner owners

For those of you who put up with maintaining a black 4runner, do you still have minor swirl marks or "spiderweb" marks? Just the tiny ones you get from washing, not ones you might get from a high speed buffer.

I have a hard time accepting it, and wanted to know how many other people have the same problem.

dude! I get those on my white one! I use the clay bar every now and again, along with regular washes and waxes. they're still there, but I pretend its too shiny to notice :)

QUoted for truth. Mine's white too.
 
Clay bars remove contaminants. Like the microscopic pieces of metal that's in the air. They also remove wax, but not swirls. I'm just curious about how many people have this stubborn crap and how they deal with it.

I'm going to start using the "pat dry" method when I wash it from now on so hopefully they don't get worse
 
it takes dedication and time, to maintain the lustrous black, i used to detail my 4R last time i did it was last February, it still beads but now its due for another detail.

It got swirl marks but its not too bad, you'll see it only when you stare. pay attention to the type of wash mitt you use, use two bucket method. my 4R is still deep black every after wash.
 
what about mcguire's scratch-x? IS that stuff safe to use on the whole vehicle? I've got quite a few swirls and spider webs.
 
I use Mother's Lambswool Wash Mitt. I haven't used the 2 bucket method before, but I am going to next time. Is the 2nd bucket just clean water?

As well as the 2 bucket method, i'm going to pat dry it with their waffle weave towels. Should prevent any further swirls.

I thought it was a thread about a black person who owns/drives a 4Runner. (By proper English that is how you could interpret it.)

Seriously, though, I once owned a black Mustang and will never have another black vehicle unless I have a garage and only drive the car on sunny Saturdays. They look clean for about an hour after being washed, and that's pretty much it.

My sliver 4Runner looks very nice, even when not so clean (which is rare); since some colors "hide" dirt, scratches and imperfections much better than others. Ironically, white is one of the better colors to keep you from detecting dirt. Dark blue is probably almost as bad as black, especially when you get water spots, dew residue, etc.

But, that being said, nothing looks better than a perfectly clean, shiny jet black car on a warm spring day.

P.S. I saw an ad in the paper for a "Straight Truck Driver" -- so is it a for a straight guy who can drive a truck; or a driver (who may or may not be straight) who can handle a straight truck?

I don't think i've ever seen one.....lol

And yeah I feel you on the black being hard to maintain. My next one will either be galactic gray, or white. I like white if the windows are all tinted to limo.
 
i have swirl marks too... i use zaino's polish with 4-5 layers and claybar so you can't really see swirls it unless you're looking at it in really bright light. It keeps my 4runner looking really shiny and like new! i probably should get an orbital to detail my 4runner... it sure is tiring doing it all by hand.
 
I haven't had a problem with swirl marks. When I wash/wax, I use a back and forth motion, not a circular.

Yeah i've seen it. But i'm not sure how well their stuff would work for me.
 
Oh, man!!! You guys have way too much time on your hands to worry about swirl or "spyderweb" marks ...

Both '06 Black GX-470 and '07 SR5 go to car wash about once a month. Have not waisted my time detailing them - have better things to do: diving, skiing, biking, playing soccer. :hello:

On the other hand - whatever rocks your boat... :cheers:

like simple said, the 4runner looks literally like a mirror after i detail it. and the great thing is the polish lasts a pretty long time, 3-6 months depending on how often you wash it. it has a really deep shine and is highly reflective. a lil expensive but the stuff works better than anything i've tried.

I took delivery of my Black '07 4R at the end of Oct. When I got it home I detailed it using my Porter Cable and Zaino AIO. I only clayed the hood and front fenders and then followed with Poorboys SSR2 on the hood as there appears to be some etching in the crease of the hood from what was probably bird crap. The 4R looked great for about a week or two and then it rained on and off for nearly a week. Add that it was also sitting outside 24/7. So... I washed it maybe 3 weeks after initially detailing it. After washing I noticed that the paint looked dull/oxidized so once again I broke out the Porter Cable and various pads. I begin with Menzerna final polish II and my hardest orange pad to remove minor swirls & spider webbing. Just with this alone the paint looked dramatically improved. Following the Menzerna I used Zaino Z5 Pro which then added a very deep, glossy look and also hid the remaining swirls.

Note, My 4R had been sitting on a lot since the end of May and when the dealer traded for it, it apparently had seen very few washes and if it had, they improperly washed it (plenty of swirls). I have found numerous defects in the paint from the environment and also a few from the factory. The Menzerna helped to improve some and remove others. I have not driven it since detailing it (nearly 3 weeks) and it has been stored in the garage ever since, so I can not comment on how well it will hold up to the elements. If does not hold up well then I will more than likely switch back to Klasse AIO instead of the Zaino products for a daily driver.
