Black Bear and Imogene Pass in an open diff 3rd gen?

Well, plans are being modified. The 5.5 hour drive from Colorado Springs to the Silverton area isn't sitting well with the family. As such, we're making the camping trip be a bit closer at the Salida/Monarch area.

It appears that there's a decent 14'er trip up Mt. Antero, so we might try to do that trail. Anyone done it before or have any recommendations for a fun, scenic, and at least a mildly challenging trail in that area?

The trail that goes over the mountain with its west trailhead in greats sand dunes national park is also really beautiful and unique, again not very technical. If you are going that way I would suggest using It to go over the front range instead of the highway.

If you get the chance, do Schofeild Pass north of Crested Butte. Lovely trail. It goes to Crystal then Marble; two really neat towns.

no....dont do Schofield. Most of it is easy but its not for beginners and not close to the Springs.

Yeah, Crested Butte would be a hike. I have a decent amount of time behind te wheel offroad (raced motocross and cross country/hare scramble on dirt bikes the majority of my 33 years of life) and feel reasonably confident offroad. That said, I have my far less adrenaline fueled wife in the car as well as my 5 year old daughter on top of being without a winch or second vehicle; kindof limits what I'm willing to tackle.

I really hope we can find some decent trails to hit up around that area, but I must be honest that I'm pretty bummed that I got vetoed on tbe ouray/silverton/telluride trip. :tsk:

Looked at the forest service page a little bit ago and it said Black Bear pass is open to snow?

Black Bear was only open to the pass tues 7/12, but had seen the bull dozer coming up on the 11th and they said it should be open by the end of the week. Imogene was open on the 11th (as was Ophir, since Black Bear closed) and was dry and lovely.

Just did all of these trails. There all open and still beautiful!
